Lately I've been listening to many versions of Chopin's Barcarolle, but none seem to be quite right. Then I had the thought to check RMCR archives, and found this thread: https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topicsearchin/rec.music.classical.recordings/subject$3Abarcarolle/rec.music.classical.recordings/jYzgrNfr26Q
Was just wondering about the feedback of the folks here today... Seems to me that this is a particularly difficult work to get right, since the flow has to continue despite all of the contrasting episodes.
Please let us know about which versions you particularly admire - thanks!!

"Why Chopin’s Barcarolle is your favorite piece (ft. Garrick Ohlsson & Emanuel Ax)"Nice!
Too bad Olsson plays it like a machine.
I've never understood the affection for the Barcarolle. The repeated LH figure, which is pretty boring in itself, drills into your head like Pachelbel's Canon.
Too bad Olsson plays it like a machine.
His Goyescas and Scriabin and
Debussy études are in my top ten.

Not necessarily. His Goyescas are different
- and very easy to listen to. There are
many excellent versions of the Debussy
and somewhat less of the Scriabin.

Granados requires latin blood and DNA.
Anglo-Saxons do not usually get the vibe.

Yes, I have Dichamp. An excellent version.
Normally, I don't believe you have to be born
in Stratford to become a good Shakespeare
actor. The same applies (mutatis mutandis)
to Ohlsson. However, this version of the
Rossignol seems to be proof to the contrary:

Grosvenor's version is nice,
though a little too smooth
and polite for my taste.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
