    I haven't seen a Massenet opera before - I've only really heard The Thing from Thais - and am impressed by this one. The scene where Cinders makes her first appearance is very, very moving indeed. Perfect for Christmas and Hanukah - in the latter version,
    the prince turns out to be a *doctor* in disguise.

    Unlike La Cenerentola, it's the stepmother who's the villain of the piece. Frederika Von Stade is a great Cinders in Rossini. American sopranos seem to excel in this role. All those rags-to-riches stories - the American Dream ...

    The Metropolitan imported this production couple years ago and was able to see it in the Met in HD series. The father was recast I think but de Billy conducted as well as DiDonato, Coote and others. Brilliantly done.......

    I wondered about that father with the rather wide, wavering vibrato. Perhaps they wanted a voice like that for the aged, much-put-upon paterfamilias. I have the same issues with this particular Seneca (Antonio Abete):

    (a) Because Soniarella gets to marry a doctor at the end.
    (b) In Britain and elsewhere it was the custom, from late Victorian times, for theatres large and small to put on pantomimes in the weeks before Christmas. These were directed largely at young children and their parents, and the plots were based on old
    children's stories, e.g. Dick Whittington, Aladdin, Mother Goose and indeed Cinderella. Certain conventions were followed: there was always a "Principle Boy" - usually the title role - played in travesti by an attractive young woman and there was always
    a "Dame", that is, a comic old woman played in travesti by a male. Popular singers and comedians could supplement their incomes by starring in 'panto' in big cities, and very often a small child's first experience of the theatre was a visit to the
    pantomime. Hanukkah usually happens round about Christmas time, and why should the goyim get all the fun?

    It came as a bit of a surprise to read suggestions for eight pieces of classical music for Hanukkah coming from Opryville, but the local community seems to be thriving.
