Lately I’ve been listening to the string quartets of Arriaga. I’m
notsure why they are not better known - while they may not be
tremendously original, they are distinctive and well constructed. They
remind me at times of the Beethoven op. 18, and even, (high praise)
Schubert. Arriaga died in 1826 (at the age of 19!) so he probably didn’t
know Schubert’s work.
I’ve long had a CD from the Voces Quartet and while they are fine, I
recently downloaded the versions by the Cuarteto Casals and they are
great! Was wondering if folks here are familiar with that group?
