I personally use the term as a catch-all for "left-of-center," e.g. Can
and Brian Eno would be avant-garde within a rock context; Albert Ayler
in a jazz context etc.
I think "officially" it tends to be used to describe modern composition
or performance techniques, kind of the opposite meaning of "classical"
but in the same context, e.g. John Cage, Iannis Xenakis.
But I had a professor who would have defined that as being "modern." He reserved "avant-garde" to describe art as a weapon, so to speak -- generally any artist(s) with a political manifesto, such as the Surrealists, Dadaists, Futurists, Situationists.
So really, it's a pretty broad term -- as far as sax music goes, howz
