Some years ago one of the national newspapers here held a contest to
choose the best musical sequence of all time from a movie.

The winner by some way was this famous clip

Broadway style music is the polar opposite of 1950s R&B. It's what the
people who hated 1950s R&B liked back then.

FWIW, there is a good deal of difference between "Broadway style music" and
the mushy pop crooners and chirpers that r'n'r lovers disliked. In fact, Broadway music in some sense was often "covered" and watered down by pop singers just like r'n'r. As for the "Singin' in the Rain" film sequence, it is much more the dancing than the singing that is celebrated.

I said nothing about what R&R lovers disliked. I only mentioned what
rock & roll HATERS liked. I doubt most rock and roll lovers even knew
Broadway style music. The people who like that stuff are by and large
not interested in the popular music of the day.

You weren't there. Teenagers who were my age might have liked pop, as you say, but the most vocal r'n'r haters were usually jazz or classical or folk music
or country fans. Or they were fiundmentalist churchgoers who thought (especially after Elvis appearsed) that their children were being enticed into sin.

You said ""Broadway style music and the mushy pop crooners and chirpers that r'n'r lovers disliked." My point was that "pop" and "Broadway style music" overlapped some, but were distinctly different in many ways.

You better read my posts again. I never said anything about "mushy pop
crooners and chirpers." I only mentioned Broadway style music.
