Never knew there was an R&B cover of Joan Weber's hit. The Counts did
the best they could with a smarmy pop song.

The song was originally titled "Let Me Go, Devil." written in 1953 by
Jenny Lou Carson. inspired from Hank William's death it was recorded
first by Wade Ray in 1953, Then other versions followed.
The changes to the song were caused by one Mitch Miller (our hero)
when he found the lyrics too depressive to be a pop song. So he got
some writers to change the lyrics and "Let Me Go, Lover" was created.
It was first featured on the television program "Studio One" on
November 15, 1954. The producer of the episode had asked Mitch Miller
for a song he could use on his murder mystery story. Mitch sent him a
copy of the new song as recorded by Joann Weber. Mitch saw that could
make it a hit and started sending out promos a week before the show
broadcast.
The original song has several versions.
This is my rating on them:
Tex Ritter
Johnny Bond
Wade Ray
George Shaw (not so much)
