What about "Early To Bed"? I recall that one getting HUGE airplay
here---but totally failing to chart
7. PRETTY BAD BLUES RONNIE SELF - 1956

My nomination from April 2020
Thank you.Thank you.
1. Pretty Bad Blues - Ronnie Self - 25
2. Let Me Tell You, Baby - Larry Williams - 23
3. 4. Fine Girls - J.B. Lenore - 21 (5-4)
4. My Love Is Here To Stay - Sammy Myers - 21
Steve is back in the Winner's Circle as we finally have our first white winner with Ronnie Self. My Larry Williams was just 2 points back in
second place. Carl's Lenore edges Roger's Myers in a 5-4 tie breaker for third place.
If I had ranked my own record first and the Self second the Self still
would have won in a tie breaker.
An extremely competitive final with just 4 points separating first and
last.
Whaaat??? No Paul Anka? I'm shocked! Shocked, I tell you!

"Diana" which I still have a liking for was the only thing by him that
came even remotely close.

I hated that record, but I admit to buying "Lonely Boy" when I was 11.
Not only that, but I also listened to the flip side, a very maudlin
ballad called "Your Love." Oh God, I'm so ashamed.

You've just reminded me of a serious error in the recently posted ACE
label listing---the omission of a real Ace favorite, the Sammy Myers mentioned here
Bruce,I always understood Chancellor to just be an ABC distributed label
NOT an actual subsidiary. Doubt there's much I'd add to a full ABC
companies list anyway.
Similar with Apt which WAS a genuine subsid. The Elegants "Little Star"
is so-so I guess but no big deal. I'm thinking that Choker Campbell
thing may well be one of the best things on that label

I am surprised that "Pretty Bad Blues" did not make Roger's list.

It did. It was #7.
"Diana" is the only Anka record that made any of my year lists of
favorites. Those RCA hits from the early 60s are DIRE!

They're all masterpieces set against Anka's much later travesty---the absolutely appalling "(You're) Having My Baby"

That does suck, but some of those RCA things are just as bad IMO.

Maybe as bad musically, but the lyrics of the later record make me
physically ill.

I always heard that he made more money from having written the
(instrumental) "Tonight Show" theme than he did from anything he sang.

Well yeah, it was played like 10,000 times over the years.
I'm sure he did well with "Times Of Your Life" on the Kodak commercials.

Johnny Carson over on UK TV they all failed. He never meant a thing here
and stayed a total unknown to the vast majority UK TV audience

But those yokels probably loved "Hee Haw."
