1956: Looking back on 1956 is almost encouraging, believe it or not. At
the time, rock & roll was almost looking like a passing fad. Chuck Berry
was treading water between "Maybellene" ('55) and "Johnny B.Goode"('58);
Little Richard was biding his time between "Tutti Frutti" ('55) and
"Lucille" ('57). Elvis had shocked the nation on TV, but he was still
rock's Vanilla Ice. Buddy Holly cut a couple of minor singles, but
"That'll Be the Day" wouldn't hit until '57. Roy Orbison began his
career, too, but he wasn't much use until 1960 or so. The charts were
dominated by pop vocal shit. In general, it was a slow year, but it was building to something big. Kinda makes you hopeful, doesn't it?
