The latest episode of ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived until the 18th at http://wrtc.streamrewind.com/bookmarks/listen/413591/rock-roots-rock-radio Here's the playlist:
1. NUT ROCKER, B. Bumble & The Stingers
A #1 hit here in UK for one week (May 12 1962) until deposed by Elvis'
"Good Luck Charm"
3. ROCKIN’ ROBIN, Bobby Day
As I mentioned last time this is another of those old 50's things I used
to love....but now can't stand
5. SHEILA, Tommy Roe
I recall us having debates on here about which was the better version of
this one.
To me it seems a "no contest". the drummed-up 1962 version is much
stronger to these ears than the 1960 original
10. COME ON, LITTLE MAMA, Ray Harris
This was always one of the harder Sun 45's to find and always sold
instantly for us when copies did turn up. Ray was an excellent performer
with some good records to his name but sadly was badly served in the
looks department for a rock 'n' roll star
13. FORGOTTEN SPRING, The Martels
Nice one but I have this as credited to "Eulis Mason with The Martells"
and as the B-side to "Va Va Voom"
on Bella label (California) on my 1959 favorites list
14. BALL THE WALL, Professor Longhair [Previously unreleased]
HUGE favorite of mine and recently included in the "TEN FAVE UNRELEASED
TRACKS FROM....1953" post on here
16. TRANSFUSION, Nervous Norvus
Instantly banned by the BBC radio here leading to Decca dropping its
planned release in the UK so sadly we never got to hear this nice
novelty at the time
"Pass the juice to me Bruce"
23. BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO, Jivin’ Gene & The Jokers
Not to be confused with the Sedaka hit of that name of course this
famous swamp rocker was originally on Floyd Soileau's Jin label before
being leased to Mercury for national distribution
24. CHAPEL BELLS, The Fascinators
Mixed race group from Brooklyn signed to Capitol (their "Oh Rose Marie"
is pretty good too).
26. BEFORE YOU ACCUSE ME, Bo Diddley
One of my VERY favorite Bo Diddley releases---this one rates a "10" on
my 1957 list
28. FLYIN’ SAUCERS ROCK & ROLL, Billy Lee Riley
The best thing he ever did IMO. And having Jerry Lee Lewis backing him
up here doesn't hurt either
30. DON’T MESS WITH MY MAN, Irma Thomas
My top Femme favorites for 1959
1. Don't Mess With My Man Irma Thomas
2. Dedicated To The One I Love Shirelles
3. Broken Hearted Melody Sarah Vaughan
4. What A Diff'rence A Day Makes Dinah Washington
5. Let's Jump The Broomstick Brenda Lee
35. GOLDEN TEARDROPS, The Flamingos
It's good of course but always preferred the "Carried Away" flip (a 9)
as opposed to the topside (a 7)
in 1953
39. SORRY (I Ran All the Way Home), The Impalas
Here's one that I always liked that gets nary a mention around here
these days. I recall this being my absolute #1 favorite record for a
while when it was out and getting regular radio spins
41. JAM UP, Tommy Ridgeley
My all time favorite instrumentals
1. Green Onions Booker T. & The MG’s - 1962
2. Honky Tonk-Part 2 Bill Doggett - 1956
3. Raunchy Bill Justis - 1957
4. Hideaway Freddy King - 1961
5. Last Night Mar-Keys - 1961
6. Hand Clappin' Red Prysock - 1955
7. Juke Little Walter - 1952
8. Night Train Jimmy Forest – 1952
9. Peter Gunn Duane Eddy - 1959
10 Jam Up Tommy Ridgley - 1954
45. TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM, The Teddy Bears
A pop number I liked then and still like now. Remember seeing these guys
doing this number on the Como TV show
