Abdul “Duke” Fakir, one of the original members of the trailblazing
1960s vocal pop group The Four Seasons, died of heart failure on Monday, according to the New York Times. He was 88. Fakir sang first tenor in
the Motown group known for its catalog of hits, including “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out, I’ll Be There.” The initial line-up of the Detroit-born act stayed together until the other
three original members died of cancer between 1997 and 2005, the Times reported. Fakir, however, continued touring and recording new music,
bringing in new members as needed. He remained on the road through the
end of 2023 before he officially retired this year. “Our hearts are
heavy as we mourn the loss of a trailblazer, icon and music legend who,
through his 70-year music career, touched the lives of so many,” Fakir’s family said in a statement to the Detroit Free Press. “As the last
living founding member of the iconic Four Tops music group, we find
solace in Duke’s legacy living on through his music for generations to come.”
