The latest ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived until July 14th at the link
below. Here's the playlist:
3. CASTIN’ MY SPELL, The Johnny Otis Show
Here's the rarely heard original version (also from 1959) by the song's writers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwOfRQed9aQ
8. JUNGLE ROCK, Hank Mizell
Not a big fan of this one but it can't be over stated how popular this
was on the UK rock 'n' roll circuit
and consequently how well it sold (both here in UK and across Europe)
circa 1975 when it was booted VERY big time---leading to it being
released by Charly label here and soaring to #3 (NME) on the UK chart in
April 1976
9. LOVE ME TO PIECES, Janis Martin
Recorded in January 1957 at RCA Studio in Nashville Janis' original
version of this song features backing from Chet Atkins and Dave Rich (gtrs)Grady Martin (bs)Buddy Harman (dms) Floyd Cramer (pno)
The song became the title of a CBS-TV "Studio One" production in July
that year where it was performed by thrush Jill Corey who took the song
into the Billboard Top 20
15. LET’S HAVE A PARTY, Wanda Jackson
Recorded 7 April 1958 at Capitol Studio in Hollywood features Wanda
Jackson (vcl) Buck Owens (gtr) Vernon Sandusky (gtr) Skeets McDonald
(bs) Joe Brawley (dms) Al Downing (pno)
First released on the "Wanda Jackson" Capitol LP in 1958 and as a
Capitol single in 1960 (a release that did well on the charts on both
sides of the pond)
16. MILKSHAKE MADEMOISELLE, Jerry Lee Lewis [Previously unreleased]
Four different takes of this song were recorded at Sun Studio,706 Union Ave,Memphis at January 16/17 session. Personnel : Jerry Lee Lewis
(vcl/pno) Billy Riley (gtr) J.W Brown (bs) J.M Van Eaton (dms)
This session also produced "Down The Line" and a couple of early
attempts at "Breathless"
"Milkshake Mademoiselle" first appears on record in 1975 via the French
LP "Original Super Rock"
29. WHEN WILL I BE LOVED, The Everly Brothers
I guess it's a toss up between this one and Sam Cooke's "Wonderful
World" as to the most valuable song left in the vaults of their previous
record company during the period we discuss---after the artist(s) in
question jumped ship to a more lucrative contract with another company
31. DUCK TAIL, Joe Clay
We've had discussions on here before as to the merits of the two
versions of "Duck Tail"---both the Joe Clay version here or the Rudy
"Tutti" Grayzell original both from 1956
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GejtyaTt31o
I go with the Clay here but you be the judge!
36. RUNNING SCARED, Roy Orbison
My favorite of his Monument recordings I think
43. STICK SHIFT, The Duals
Comes in at #10 on my Favorite Instrumentals of 1961 list
1..Hideaway Freddy King - 1961
2. Last Night Mar-Keys - 1961
3. You Can’t Sit Down Philip Upchurch Combo - 1961

10.Stick Shift Duals - 1961
45. TILL THEN, The Classics

46. GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART GOODNIGHT, The Spaniels
I guess the ultimate "closer" number never bettered
