    Tani Allen was a native of Memphis,Tennessee recording country ditties for Jim Bulleit’s Bullet company over in Nashville. He had a series of records out on Bullet between 1950 and 1952 the most famous of which today has to be the catchy country bop “
    Tennessee Jive” (with vocal by Buck Turner)

    Why so famous? Well mostly because two years later Bill Haley & Haley’s Comets (his then label billing)
    and recording for Dave Miller’s Essex outfit “borrowed”—and re-recorded----the whole shebang renaming it “Real Rock Drive”

    Alias Louisa Barker (nee Louise Dupont) born in New Orleans and a veteran of the New Orleans music scene and first recorded as “Lu Blue” in 1938

    Together with her band leader husband Danny Barker she later embarked on a series of singles for Capitol that produced the second most successful cover (after Evelyn Knight’s #1 version) of the big 1948 hit “A Little Bird Told Me” (originally by
    Paula Watson)----leading to the song in question here---the risqué “Bow Legged Daddy”

    Lyrics on this novelty blues leaves very little to the imagination. Blue Lu sells it in her winning, little-glrl fashion"

    Grover Franklin Bess alias Big Jeff hailed from Ashland City Tennessee.

    Forming the country band “The Radio Playboys” they played events,fairs,carnivals etc and were approached to record their particular brand of country music at intervals on various labels.It was 1950 when Jeff & the band were approached to cut records
    with Randy Wood’s fledging Dot company in nearby Gallatin.

    Their first recording for Dot was “Jukebox Boogie” in the style then known as “country bop” which style in the hands of others (and roughed up a little) later translated into “rockabilly”

    I first heard “Jukebox Boogie” many years ago and its stayed a firm favorite of the genre ever since

    Big voiced blues shouter Piney was born Columbus Perry in 1922 in Birmingham—not the UK birthplace of yours truly---but the same-named one in Alabama.

    After relocating To Baltimore in 1940 he made his debut as “Piney Brown” in 1947 (the name lifted from a club owner in Kansas City who was immortalized in Joe Turner’s “Piney Brown Blues”) for the Miracle label and moving to New York’s own
    Apollo label in 1948 and releasing the fine blues rocker “That’s Right Baby” in February 1950.

    Piney managed to stay on the fringes of the music scene with sporadic releases on labels like Jubilee, Duke,Mad etc right through the 1950’s and even into the 1960’s

    Formed in Washington DC in 1948 The Buddies group eventually morphed into The Cap-Tans with a recording deal with Gotham label in 1950. Since their previous release had been something of a flop Gotham refused to handle the new song----an Ink Spot-ish
    treatment of “I’m So Crazy For Love”. The resulting Dot single fared pretty well—selling 15,000 copies in the first week alone.

    Though it never made any chart,the song did well enough to spawn cover versions by Billy Eckstíne,The Blenders,Lonnie Johnson,Paul Gayten and The Ravens

    “I’m So Crazy For Love” was popular enough to make Dot reissue the single in 1953.

    your man but he comes to see me sometimes” tells you exactly where this is headed

    Recorded May 1950 at Memphis Recording Service,Union Ave Memphis Tennessee and released as 4 Star 1492 (b/w “School Boy” recorded at same session) featuring John Hunter (vcl/pno) unknown (gtr) unknown (bs) unknown (dms). Both sides of this 4 Star 78
    curiously marked “Not suitable for radio broadcast”

    Reviewed in “Billboard” August 5 1950 “Gravel voiced shouter gets off a humorous fast blues with unison chanting and rhythm combo supporting”

    The 4 Star 78 of this is ultra-rare of course but its huge rarity still pales alongside a special 4 track extended play 78RPM issued as “NR-S #1A” featuring both sides of the Hunter single (with the “Schoolboy” flip) plus Cactus Pryor ‘s “If
    I’d Know’d You’se A Comin’ I’d Have Cut My Throat” and his “Can’t Yodel Blues”

    In latter days both “Cool Down Mamma” and “Schoolboy” saw re-release---both featuring on the Charly Sun Box 105 “Sun : The Blues Years” set released in 1984

    Joe Turner-inspired shouter extolling the virtues of Scotland’s most famous beverage released on Roost 607. Apparently Roost (that boasted a very young Harry Belafonte on its books at this time) was back then a subsidiary or had some kind of
    distribution attachment to the famous established r&b based label Regal.

    The singer had undertaken a session for Roost in May 1950 so this track (and the flip “Jelly Roll”) were almost certainly recorded there and released in June 1950.

    The Roost label would later go on to become “Royal Roost”---and would score a major Top 20 hit on the pop chart in later years with Eddie Cooley And The Dimples and “Priscilla”

    After a short period recording in Nashville for Columbia the noted “one man band” returned to Memphis for this beauty---recorded at Memphis Recording Service Union Ave Memphis July 27 1950 under the auspices of both Sam Phillips and noted Memphis
    deejay Dewey Phillips and released as “Boogie In The Park”/”Gotta
    Let You Go” on the appropriately named “It’s The Phillips” label—the label’s first and ONLY release---with just 300 copies pressed utilising the financial resources of both Sam and Dewey.

    Should mention here that if you’re after an original 78 of this then your own financial resources better be more than just good----it’s currently valued in the FIVE figure range!!

    The record must have piqued enough interest from Modern Records out on the West Coast for them to add Joe to their label roster and request all future recordings by him be supervised by Sam and sent to them to appear on Modern. Thus explaining how the re-
    recording of “Boogie In The Park” from a 706 Union session in
    November appeared as Modern 813.

    A truly great one from one of the longest lasting (and most successful) 1950’s top blues names here getting into his stride after his then-recent move to the Modern label. This is my personal favorite by him for the year

    This one did pretty well in Bruce's January 2020 Obscurities contest where (nominated by Jim) it justly reached the Final---but was beaten by Diane’s Blue Dots’ “Please Don’t Tell ‘Em”

    It also reached the Final in the Champions contest that December too---and was once again beaten by Diane’s same record!!

    The Jubilators thus consisted of Gene Mumford (tenor), Raymond "Pee Wee" Barnes (tenor), Alden "Allen" Bunn (baritone), Hadie Rowe (baritone), Thermon Ruth (baritone), and David McNeil (bass).

    The group that would soon be known as the Larks came up to the NYC area and recorded for 4 different labels on the same day in 1950. This one was recorded for my grandfather at Savoy an was issued on his Regent subsidiary. Here's Unca Marvy's writeup on
    this legendary day.

    The group it was time to get on record. So all six of them piled into Bunn's car and drove up from North Carolina to New York. They stayed with some of Ruth's relatives on 143rd Street in Harlem and for about a week they rehearsed constantly. Then, when
    they were ready, they set out for what was possibly the most amazing day of recording in history: October 5, 1950.

    First, they went to Jerry Blaine's Jubilee Records (at 315 West 47th Street in Manhattan). There, they recorded four gospel songs, all released later in the month: "Why Not Today" (led by Hadie Rowe and Allen Bunn), "Down Here I've Done My Best" (Thermon
    Ruth), "Sorrow Valley" (Allen Bunn and David McNeil) and "Since Mother's Been Gone" (Hadie Rowe; note that the song was mistitled "Since Mother's Done Gone" on the label). (The religious songs that the group recorded that day were a mixture of gospel and
    jubilee; I'm not an expert, so I'll just refer to all of them as "gospel.")

    So far, nothing unusual. However, the Jubilators were broke, and Thermon had been around long enough to know that they'd never see any royalties, only up-front payments for the session. So they told Jubilee that they were the "Selah Singers," got their
    money and headed across the Hudson River into New Jersey.

    Their first stop in New Jersey was the Braun brothers' Regal Records at 20 East Elizabeth Avenue, in Linden. This time they used the name "Jubilators," and recorded another four songs: "Mother Called My Name" and "Get On The Road To Glory" (both led by
    Allen Bunn), "Seek And Ye Shall Find" (led by Gene Mumford), and "I've Got Heaven On My Mind" (fronted by Hadie Rowe).

    Then they drove up to Newark and knocked on the door of Savoy Records (at 58 Market Street). There, they cut another four masters, this time secular tunes: "Easy Dying Blues" (led by Allen), "Got To Go Back Again" (a Korean War lament - "I just got home
    and I've got to go back again" - led by David McNeil), "Lonely Heart" (Gene), and "Lemon Squeezer" ("The way I squeeze your lemons is a low-down dirty shame" - not exactly a song for gospel audiences; also led by David). To further disguise their plans,
    the sextet called themselves the "4 Barons" on this session.

    Finally, they drove back to Manhattan, to the offices of Apollo Records at 457 West 45th Street. Calling themselves the "Southern Harmonaires" this time, they were taken back to the same Mastertone Recording Studios that the "Selah Singers" had used that
    very morning. They laid down five gospel tracks: "Honey In The Rock" (led by Hadie), "Crucifixion" (Gene), "I'm So Glad" (Gene), "Who Will Your Captain Be" (Gene), and "Shadrack" (Allen).

    Bess BermanAnd then disaster struck! Someone at the studio remembered them from the Jubilee Records session that morning and spilled the beans to Apollo owner Bess Berman. Bess decided she wanted them badly enough to make a deal with the other companies.
    When the dust had settled, Apollo had the contract, but Jubilee, Regal, and Savoy/Regent got to issue the masters that had been recorded under the "Selah Singers," the "Jubilators," and the "4 Barons." (Incidentally, they not only changed the group's
    name with every session, but they also invented different names for themselves each time they signed on the dotted line.)

    In one day: seventeen masters, for four companies, under four different group names, and twenty-four personal names. That has to be some sort of record.

    Okay, so I am guessing that it was an earlier master that only was released because of his success on Savoy.

    The Jubilators thus consisted of Gene Mumford (tenor), Raymond "Pee Wee" Barnes (tenor), Alden "Allen" Bunn (baritone), Hadie Rowe (baritone), Thermon Ruth (baritone), and David McNeil (bass).

    The group that would soon be known as the Larks came up to the NYC area and recorded for 4 different labels on the same day in 1950. This one was recorded for my grandfather at Savoy an was issued on his Regent subsidiary. Here's Unca Marvy's writeup
    on this legendary day.

    The group it was time to get on record. So all six of them piled into Bunn's car and drove up from North Carolina to New York. They stayed with some of Ruth's relatives on 143rd Street in Harlem and for about a week they rehearsed constantly. Then,
    when they were ready, they set out for what was possibly the most amazing day of recording in history: October 5, 1950.

    First, they went to Jerry Blaine's Jubilee Records (at 315 West 47th Street in Manhattan). There, they recorded four gospel songs, all released later in the month: "Why Not Today" (led by Hadie Rowe and Allen Bunn), "Down Here I've Done My Best" (
    Thermon Ruth), "Sorrow Valley" (Allen Bunn and David McNeil) and "Since Mother's Been Gone" (Hadie Rowe; note that the song was mistitled "Since Mother's Done Gone" on the label). (The religious songs that the group recorded that day were a mixture of
    gospel and jubilee; I'm not an expert, so I'll just refer to all of them as "gospel.")

    So far, nothing unusual. However, the Jubilators were broke, and Thermon had been around long enough to know that they'd never see any royalties, only up-front payments for the session. So they told Jubilee that they were the "Selah Singers," got their
    money and headed across the Hudson River into New Jersey.

    Their first stop in New Jersey was the Braun brothers' Regal Records at 20 East Elizabeth Avenue, in Linden. This time they used the name "Jubilators," and recorded another four songs: "Mother Called My Name" and "Get On The Road To Glory" (both led by
    Allen Bunn), "Seek And Ye Shall Find" (led by Gene Mumford), and "I've Got Heaven On My Mind" (fronted by Hadie Rowe).

    Then they drove up to Newark and knocked on the door of Savoy Records (at 58 Market Street). There, they cut another four masters, this time secular tunes: "Easy Dying Blues" (led by Allen), "Got To Go Back Again" (a Korean War lament - "I just got
    home and I've got to go back again" - led by David McNeil), "Lonely Heart" (Gene), and "Lemon Squeezer" ("The way I squeeze your lemons is a low-down dirty shame" - not exactly a song for gospel audiences; also led by David). To further disguise their
    plans, the sextet called themselves the "4 Barons" on this session.

    Finally, they drove back to Manhattan, to the offices of Apollo Records at 457 West 45th Street. Calling themselves the "Southern Harmonaires" this time, they were taken back to the same Mastertone Recording Studios that the "Selah Singers" had used
    that very morning. They laid down five gospel tracks: "Honey In The Rock" (led by Hadie), "Crucifixion" (Gene), "I'm So Glad" (Gene), "Who Will Your Captain Be" (Gene), and "Shadrack" (Allen).

    Bess BermanAnd then disaster struck! Someone at the studio remembered them from the Jubilee Records session that morning and spilled the beans to Apollo owner Bess Berman. Bess decided she wanted them badly enough to make a deal with the other
    companies. When the dust had settled, Apollo had the contract, but Jubilee, Regal, and Savoy/Regent got to issue the masters that had been recorded under the "Selah Singers," the "Jubilators," and the "4 Barons." (Incidentally, they not only changed the
    group's name with every session, but they also invented different names for themselves each time they signed on the dotted line.)

    In one day: seventeen masters, for four companies, under four different group names, and twenty-four personal names. That has to be some sort of record.

    GREAT notes for a great record!
