1. RAUNCHY, Ernie Freeman (1957-58)
Bill Justis had head and shoulders the best single of this much recorded classic but Freeman ran him a decent second
3. SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK, Dwight Pullen (1958)
This was one of the biggest sellers when many of these really hard to find original RAB records were booted en masse back in the 70's He made many more records later as "Whitey Pullen" including another that was booted extensively "Walk My Way Back Home"
4. DOOBY DOOBY WAH, Ritchie Valens (1959)
Never a single in the USA this came out over here as the flip of "Come On Let's Go" in 1958
5. LOVE POTION NO. 9, The Clovers (1959)
Terrific number tho I have a soft spot for the "Love Potion No. 10" album version
6. ROBERTA, Frankie Ford (1959)
Both are great but I've always preferred "Roberta" to the hit " Sea Cruise" side
10. TOPSY II, Cozy Cole (1958)
I could never get to grips with this one. Never liked it. When I want drums I'll send for Sandy Nelson
11. A SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE, The Harptones (1953)
High on the list of 10's on my 1953 list (headed by "Money Honey"). Never released here at the time
15. WILLIE AND THE HAND JIVE, The Johnny Otis Show (1958)
Title change for UK audiences where this appeared as "The Johnny Otis Hand Jive". The followup "Willie Did The Cha Cha" came out untouched tho as did the later Cliff Richard version of "Willie And The Hand Jive"
16. SHAKIN’ ALL OVER, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates (1960)
There weren't too many of them but I agree that this is leading the (very small) pack of best British artist records from the pre-Beatles era
24. WHAT TIME IS IT, The Jive Five (1962)
The great "Sopranos" TV series used a lot of its music to really GREAT effect---and none better than this one
25. IN MY ROOM, The Beach Boys (1963)
For some reason I've never fathomed two big early Beach Boys US hits were never issued as singles here in UK. They were "Surfer Girl"/"Little Deuce Coupe" and "Be True To Your School"/"In My Room"
26. BRAND NEW CADILLAC, Vince Taylor & His Playboys (1959)
Another one to go with the Johnny Kidd (above) as an example of a really good pre-Beatles UK single
29. BYE BYE LOVE, The Everly Brothers (1957)
This was one of those earth shattering moments in my life when I heard the Everlys and "Bye Bye Love" for the first time. To go up there on the shelf with hearing "Rock Around The Clock" (that changed my life),"Heartbreak Hotel" and Little Richard's "
Tutti Frutti" for the first time
45. THERE GOES MY BABY, The Drifters (1959)
High 10 in my list of 1959 favorites, strings and all. Wonderful record!!
