  • Nearly All Usenet SPAM is posted from Google Groups

    This, and ensuing complaints, likely had a major influence on Google
    pulling the plug in February.

    Let's hope these spammers do not adopt another free web based
    newsreader.

    Nova, to its great credit, seems able to filter out these spam posts.

    Perhaps Retro Guy and his admin colleagues constantly monitor
    posts from Google Groups and manually delete spam messages, from
    the Nova web-accessed Usenet database, as they come in?

    Where are you getting that from? I'm using it for free right now. I did not see anything about having to pay for it.

    There is no cost. If someone is collecting $4.99 a month, I wish they
    would send it to me, lol.

    The spam filtering is a coordinated effort between several Usenet News administrators, including myself.

    It is mostly automated (not entirely), and we share the filtering results
    with any Usenet News server that wishes to apply them.

    Retro Guy, could you offer any clues as to what filters you use
    so that individual Usenet users can develop filters themselves if
    their newsreader (eg Mozilla Thunderbird) allows filters to be set?

    There are plenty of other web front ends that you can use to access
    the group that you do not need to pay for. If you prefer an NNTP
    server, there are a few that are free but you might not see as good
    service or reach as you will, with some of them that have a nominal
    fee.

    Most of us are using highly modified spamassassin setups, tied in to our
    nntp servers.

    The best thing for an end user is to use a nntp server from a provider
    that filters, then you might only need to add a couple of minor filters to
    your T-Bird setup to meet your individual preferences.

    www.eternal-september.org (Ray is the admin) - free / filtered
