I absolutely hate this News reader format. When I want to reply to a
message the default just sends an email to the poster. If you want it
posted to the thread in the group, you need to tell it that yourself >manually.
You also have no choice but to have to see all of the HTML and whatever
else code in each message.

See if these are applicablle in your case.
Just select the message to reply to and click on the letter 'R' on
your keyboard.
Check "Message" menu "properties." Properties under "Format" tab
should say "UUendcoded."

Sorry, the propterties only applies to outgoing messages. That should
say "UUencoded."
You might check your view menu to make sure "View as HTML" isn't
selected.

If you're on the TB main screen that shows all messages, then to reply
to a particular message you simply right-click it and select "Followup
to Newsgroup".
If you have double-clicked a message to read it, to reply you simply
click on "Folllowup" north-east of the message.

Jim, Bruce is using Thunderbird not Agent (the newsreader).
'R', for instance, doesn't work in TB (it's TB from now on :)

Try Nova BBS:
https://www.novabbs.com/arts/thread.php?group=rec.music.rock-pop-r%252Bb.1950s
With Google Groups shutting down the Usenet access, this is a good alternative for now, Nova BBS web based portal for Usenet.

This looks interesting. Is it safe?

The format is more like Google Groups+ than TB or Agent.
Similar but better than GG in some respects, when entering a
thread/topic the tree of user responses is shown at top of page and,
fwiw, if you right-click on any 'limb' of this tree you can opt for a
split screen display - the present page remains on left and all
messages in thread appear in full on scrollable right-hand side.
Although it seems to limit you to 12 posts per hour.
Yes, but no one going to be making 12 posts in an hour every-----------
often....unless Fred comes back from the grave and we get into one of
those frantic feuds again :-)
