    I've never heard #'s 2, 4, 6, 7, OR 9.
I was 12 years old in 1960 and by then I had my own radio and listened
    every day.
You would think something that was a big hit a few hundred miles away
would be pretty well known in NYC, but evidently that was not the case.

Doesn't exactly strike me as R&B.

I would imagine WOOK was a low-powered station that signed off at sunset. A lot of those R&B stations were.

For that matter, so was Erma Franklin's.

with teen idol looks, Artie Lewis indeed was white,

I think there may well be a second "Artie Lewis" out there

The first record attributed to him has a more pronounced r&b sound

    "Supposin'" - 1959

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1T4B1xoufQ

Ditto with the last record attribute to him

    "Ain't No Good" - 1967 (on Loma a normally straight r&b label)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du41MVVqm70

Maybe its the doppelganger effect that spooked WOOK ? :)
