I certainly get Harvest (wouldn't have guessed he'd be into that
particularly though) and even Pet Sounds but The Band was never
    one of my favorite bands.

I remember buying a The Band greatest hits (as such) CD one time
and getting rid of it after a few listens.

Personally, I love The Band, at least their first few albums. I can see
how they attracteded Paul in those days, by showing that you could
scale back on much of the production fru-fru and just play a good,
rootsy song with passion and groove, with more of a live feel. Kind of
a template for the Let It Be and Abbey Road sessions.

No! Paul was crazy about Pet Sounds, and has praised the songs and the
bass playing (which he incorrectly ascribed to Brian Wilson -- not
Paul's fault, as the Wrecking Crew guys weren't credited originally)
    constantly over the decades.

The Band and Neil Young surprise me a bit.

I don't think Paul was admiring the bass playing per se, but the lines.
The Wrecking Crew may have physically played the bass parts on Pet
Sounds, but Brian composed them. They're idiosyncratic and distinctive
and far from what most seasoned session players would have come up on
    their own.

All 4 Beatles loved that album when it came out.
