Which is the better song? Which is the more effective attack against
the person it is directed at?
I think they're about equal on all fronts. Neither is among John's best musical efforts; Walls and Bridges has several better songs than S&G,
but I can't say that about Imagine and HDYS.
HDYS has some stupid Yokoesque lines ("The one mistake you made was in
your head") and the cleverer "The only thing you've done was
Yesterday/And since you've gone you're Just Another Day."
S&G has the zinger: "Your teeth are clean/But your mind is capped" --
which has the distinction of being quoted by Jerzy Kosinski in his book Pinball, which is about a reclusive rock star.
