Obituary:
Paul J. Jones, a former Philadelphia newspaper columnist, died Wednesday at his home in Penn Valley, Pa. He was 77 years old.
Mr. Jones wrote “Candid Shots” several times a week in The Philadelphia Bulletin between 1946 and his retirement in 1969. He joined the newspaper's editorial staff in 1939. He was also the author of “The Irish Brigade,” a study of Civil War
regiment, published in 1969 by Robert Luce.
He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1920 and received a doctorate in Romance languages there in 1937. He was a member of the Penn faculty for eight years.
Surviving are his widow, Katherine; 2 sons, Hugh and Thomas; 2 daughters, Mrs. Samuel Goodall and Mrs. Quintin Mecke; a sister, Mrs. Howard Urian, and 16 grandchildren.
