    Obituary:
    Paul J. Jones, a former Philadelphia newspaper columnist, died Wednesday at his home in Penn Valley, Pa. He was 77 years old.

    Mr. Jones wrote “Candid Shots” several times a week in The Philadelphia Bulletin between 1946 and his retirement in 1969. He joined the newspaper's editorial staff in 1939. He was also the author of “The Irish Brigade,” a study of Civil War
    regiment, published in 1969 by Robert Luce.

    He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1920 and received a doctorate in Romance languages there in 1937. He was a member of the Penn faculty for eight years.

    Surviving are his widow, Katherine; 2 sons, Hugh and Thomas; 2 daughters, Mrs. Samuel Goodall and Mrs. Quintin Mecke; a sister, Mrs. Howard Urian, and 16 grandchildren.

    I wonder if he was just hostile to rock music. The Beatles' musical talent was obvious by this point,even of nobody could have guessed where it would take them.

    The older generation just considered it noise, much like I now consider all most modern music just noise.
