    I coincidentally just rented a documentary about him two weeks ago:
    Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape. Highly recommended.

    It probably would have, but at a much different scale and pace. I believe I saw a
    picture of somebody whth a stash of GD reel tapes in "Grateful Dead:
    The Official Book of the Deadheads"

    It was noted some time ago that there was a significant about of blank tape sales to
    fans of the Grateful Dead, according to a wholesale group, who in turn
    got their info from retailers.
    Something like 15%.

    It’s not what the movie was about.

    The Grateful Dead accounted for some sales at some point among some people,
    but otherwise were clearly just a blip fraction in the overall scheme of
    things in the cassette narrative and trajectory, as the NYT quoted:
    “Philips says *100 billion* cassettes have been sold worldwide.”

    It was more about Philips product development team, which Mr. Ottens headed.
    By watching this docu, it was a team effort and not solely Otten's total idea. He was only part of the story.
