Many years ago, at a New York Philharmonic concert conducted by Andre Kostelanetz, I heard an encore selection from an opera called "Ero, the Joker". Does anyone know anything about this work? The particular orchestral excerpt that was played was the "Kolo". It was a delightful piece of music. I wonder what the rest of the music in the opera is
like. Is anyone aware of a recording of the "Kolo" or the entire opera?
There used to be a few recordings, I believe, of the Kolo from "Ero s
Onoga Svijeta" ["Ero, der Schelm" in German], by Jakov Gotovac, and it was played with some frequency on our local classical radio stations. I have
a complete recording on 3 lp's, Jugoton LPY-V 94/95/96, which includes the Serbo-Croatian libretto and "explanatory text" in German and English as
well. The cast includes baritone Vladimir Ruzdak, who made a brief
appearance at the Met some decades ago, and Marijana Radev and Josip
Gostic (the latter in the title rĂ´le), both of whom had some international activity. The opera is a comedy, and this recording, by the Zagreb Opera,
is conducted by the composer.
Best wishes,
