Several filkers followed me to Mindly, even though I more or less picked
it out of a hat, and every well-publicized Mastodon server has been
swamped with new users for the past week. You can look some more or wait
for some servers to settle down.
Your link takes me to a site that has Sign Up as a choice, but
clicking on that button gives me a mastodon page, not a mindly page,
of info without links or lists of servers or whatever for acting on
their info. I can see why mastodon is being described as difficult,
but I'm sure it's worth it compared to staying on Twitter.
I'm having a little trouble understanding what you saw. Mindly is a
Mastodon instance. If I go to that page without already being logged in,
I'm prompted for a username, email address, and password.
Maybe the difficulty is in how Mastodon works. At the risk of repeating
the obvious, let me repeat a few basics; sorry if you already understand
this and the problem lies elsewhere. It hopefully will be helpful to
someone who reads this.
Mastodon is a federated service. That means that anyone with some tech knowledge and a little money can run its software on a server; that's
called an instance. Mindly is one such instance. You sign up on a
particular instance, and you can sign up on multiple instances if you
like. (I'm on Mindly and Liberdon with my filk news and personal
accounts respectively.) All the instances are networked together. You
can find people more easily on the same instance, but you can follow
people on any instance.
Each instance has its own rules, and you should read them before signing
up. Some are very restrictive about what you can post. I chose Mindly
because its rules look sensible to me. Another popular instance among
fans is wandering.shop, but currently it requires getting an invitation
from someone who's already there to sign up.
