  • Windshield cutting

    Fill 'em up on me barkeep.

    I'm planning on cutting my stock Ultra windshield down about 1.5" I've
    watched several videos of guys doing this and am wondering what I'm
    missing. Of the videos of guys who cut HD windshields like the ones on
    the Ultra, I just don't understand why they all cut them from the top?
    I can understand it on some of those sport bikes that have irregular
    lines at the bottom of the shield. But if you cut the top, you have to
    get that perfect curve, then do all the sanding and polishing at the cut
    to make it acceptable looking. I didn't see one video of anyone cutting
    one from the bottom. I get the part about using the bikes mounts to
    hold the piece for the cutting, but am pretty sure I can secure it
    enough with a little help from the ol' lady. If you cut the bottom
    instead of the top, you've got the established curve, and don't have to
    worry too much about cleaning up the edge that goes into the fairing.
    Am I missing something?

    How far up the shield does the curve start ? If you cut the bottom
    you might narrow it enough that it either won't fit properly or it'll
    just look weird . I usually use a bandsaw with a fine blade , use
    masking tape on the saw table to prevent scratches . I tried using tape
    on the windshield once , it peeled the coating off that reduces
    scratching .

    Er...Unless they changed the way they mount the windshield on
    Ultras in the last 15 years or so since I got out of the bizz, the
    bottom has the notches/holes cut so the fasteners can fit through. If
    you remove that, then you have to cut new ones, which would suck.

    Yeah, you hit the part I missed. I wasn't expecting the complicated
    tabs, and even the design for the hole cut. I was expecting to just
    drill a hole. I see now why people choose to cut the top, and Snag had
    the right idea in using a bandsaw to make the slice if you were going to
    do that. I gave mine away and forgot all about it.
    I decided to just go buy what they claim is the 10". It actually lowers
    it a full 3 inches from the original, almost twice what I was going to
    do. You can get replacements from places other than HD, but I just
    wanted to get it done and paid around $152 for theirs. I saw others for
    well under $50. Don't know what the quality would be like.

    Yeah, if you do decide to cut it, many people without bandsaws use
    a jigsaw. Just use a very fine blade, make sure you tape it and mark
    your curve first, etc...
