TACOMA, Wash. The man accused of randomly stabbing a woman walking in Tacoma's Point Defiance Park in February was arrested Friday morning at
San Francisco International Airport while allegedly attempting to leave
the country, according to police.
Tacoma Police Department (TPD) Det. William Muse said investigators
believe the man was a matter of hours away from leaving the United
States when he was arrested without incident. Officials are not naming the suspect until he is extradited to Washington to avoid compromising the investigation.
Muse said detectives do not believe the man is a suspect in any other
crimes the TPD is investigating at this time. Muse also said the man also
does not have a criminal history in Tacoma. He reportedly grew up on the
east coast but has ties to the Puget Sound and has lived in the area for
less than a decade.
The timeframe is unclear for his extradition, but it was reported that
Tacoma detectives were on their way to San Francisco on Friday.
The stabbing happened on a marked trail near Five-Mile Drive in broad
daylight on Feb. 10 around 1 p.m. The woman who was stabbed said she had crossed the suspect on the Blue Line Trail, but did not believe he posed a threat until she heard footsteps behind her, then felt a blow to the head.
The woman told police the man pinned her down, stabbed her repeatedly and threatened to kill her as she screamed for help.
"I begged him to let me go, that I could give him money, that I could give
him anything he wanted if he let me live," the woman, who police
identified as Jane, said during a press conference in February. "That
was when he made it verbally explicit that his intent was to kill me. And,
he told me to tilt my neck back so he could end my pain."
Witnesses intervened and stopped the attack. Jane said one of the
witnesses kicked the suspect in the head, and then he fled.
The TPD said the suspect fled on foot through the trails after the attack.
TPD detectives learned the identity of the suspect after a sketch was
released to the public. Investigators then learned the man had fled
Washington state after the attack.
The TPD said detectives learned the suspect was possibly in Atlanta,
Georgia, and were able to get a confidential, Attempted Murder in the First-Degree warrant with nationwide extradition for the suspect.
Detectives flew to Atlanta, which is where detectives learned he was
possibly attempting to flee the U.S.
On Friday, with the help of the San Francisco Office of the Federal
Marshalls Fugitive Task Force and the San Francisco Police Department
(SFD), the man was arrested at the airport and was being held at a
California correctional facility.
Following the Feb. attack, Metro Parks Tacoma confirmed two portable
security cameras had been placed within the park, recording everyone who officially entered the area through the front gate.
The victim and her family have requested that the public not identify them online, including on social media, as a matter of safety.
