NerfHack - Nemesis vanished from mine-town bones level?

In a NerfHack game my try to convert the (unattended) altar lead to
two summoned hostile demons; one of them a balrog. - After a long
battle (during which the balrog snatched my primary longsword with
his bullwhip) I finally died to that nemesis.
Some games later I stumbled again into that mine-town, my own bones
level. But the balrog wasn't there any more. - Why?
