• NerfHack - Why is spell-casting not possible at the moment?

From Janis Papanagnou@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jan 10 08:35:47 2025
In my NerfHack game my Monk regularly does spell-casting. His very own
'restore ability' spell is natively at 0% failure and still has a 26% retention.

When I entered The Lost Tomb I switched my spell-supporting artifact,
the non-aligned quarterstaff named Origin, to the one-handed Serentity
to become unburdened. But I noticed that my spells were non-castable
anymore, and I thought it might have been an effect of that dungeon
place or some spell power that the nearby lich had maybe casted to
make my magic ineffective. - But after leaving my spells still didn't
work; spell-casting was still impossible (despite the 0% fail and 26% retention). Only after I've took the Origin staff out of my bag it
was possible to cast again. (My [visible] stats have also not changed
when I removed The Origin.) - Can anyone explain that?

I can't check that at the moment - too few mana energy - but it may
be that wielding any weapon (any other than the artifact staff) and
a wearing also a shield might have inhibited the spell-casting. It
    may be that simple. Doh!
