• [evilhack] What to do with "invincible" hostile player characters

From Janis Papanagnou@21:1/5 to All on Wed Apr 26 15:17:40 2023
Some player character with HP:~120 and AC:-35 appeared that I was
unable to kill. I couldn't even damage him with my +6 Sword of
Annihilation, neither did my potion of paralysis hit him, nor was
a zap from a wand of polymorph effective. In addition it's quite
a nuisance that he seems to call in many elementals and other
beats. My tame larger pegasus was obviously also not effective.
Is there anything I can do or is it just an obstacle that I have
    to circumvent?

It is a part of EvilHack that is greatly unbalanced. But, the Maker has
spoken and it is staying. Makes no sense: an über-powerful warrior
with legendary skills and a legendary artifact weapon cannot touch
them, but yet magic works. The answer to a lot of EvilHack's
"nuances" is: use magic. Or a rare scroll or potion.

Spells and wands may/can help here. Boulder them of and pelt them
with missiles or elemental wands. Poison can really help here. Tame
purple worms are awesome for player monsters. Not sure if this has
been nerfed any further. Player monsters now have rings of slow
digestion. Trapping them behind a loose bolder and dealing with
them later, or not at all, is a solution too.

It also helps if you actually have unrestricted skill in the weapons you use against them.

For my part, hence: "legendary skills." Meaning, maxed out. Does not
matter if you attack them with Expert skill with a +7 artifact sword — with their -40 AC. You can barely touch them. And yet they whack you when
    you have -55 AC.

And the responses I get are "oh, those silly monsters!" "that's the way monsters are for you!", etc., etc. . . .

I tend to keep increase accuracy rings around for occasions like these or use something along the lines of Grimtooth - you can also polymorph them if they don't have magic resistance, since most available polyforms will almost always have less AC.

As an additional (very late) answer, I also recommend footrice eggs or corpses - at worst, you can land a few choice hits and force them to use up vital utilities.
