What about Bobby Fischer? Here's an excerpt about his

To quote a famous American tennis player;
Bonkers Fischer? You cannot be serious !!!
He set a standard when he was young, then he went crazy. He
should have played Karpov in 1975 and not chickened out.
A bit harsh,
Possibly.
Although his comments on 9/11 - among some other weird things he's said
over the years - would not endear him to a modern American audience.

As has been pointed out, Fischer stopped playing Chess around 30
years of age, so he never built upon his legacy.
We know chess is full of politics but ducking Karpov and giving up his
title didn't look good.
{ Fischer still wrote one of my favourite ever chess books
though }
