From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 8 21:56:28 2025
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-10-28,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of What She Said, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition

As this game was played the same week as Halloween, What She Said
made it mostly a theme game on that topic.

    * Game 7, Round 2 - Leisure - Assassin's Creed

The Assassin's Creed video-game franchise sets each of its games in
a specific historic setting, and each game is given a variation
on the basic franchise logo that is inspired by the setting.
We'll give you the time-and-place setting of a game (but not the
title); you look at the handout:

    http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/7:2/ass.pdf

and tell us which number logo belongs to that game. (Note that
the numbers are *above* the images.)

    1. Jamaica, Cuba, and the greater Caribbean, 1715-22.
    2. Alexandria, Memphis, and Thebes, 49-34 BC.
    3. Baghdad, 860-67.
    4. Paris, 1789-95.
    5. Norway, the British Isles, and Paris, 870-89.
    6. London, 1868.
    7. Japan, 1581-83.
    8. Greece, 431-20 BC.
    9. New England, 1758-83.
    10. Rome, 1499-1506.

There were two decoys: decode the rot13 if you like to identify
the games by number for fun, but for no points.

    11. "Nffnffva'f Perrq: Eriryngvbaf".
    12. "Nffnffva'f Perrq: Ebthr".

    * Game 7, Round 3 - History - Halloween

Did you know it's Halloween this week? It's true! 10 questions
about spooky traditions, and also historical events which happened
    on Halloween.

    1. Halloween is generally considered to have its origins in a
Celtic religious festival. What is the name of that festival?

    2. The jack-o-lantern goes back to at least the 1400s, but using
pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns only began when European settlers
in North America started using them because they were larger
and easier to carve than the vegetable traditionally used for
jack-o-lanterns before that. Which vegetable was this?

    3. In late medieval times, many villages in mainland Europe --
and particularly in France -- believed that on the night before
All Saints' Day the dead rose from their graves to have "a
hideous carnival". In order to prevent this from happening,
villages would enact a "hideous carnival" of their own to
appease the dead. What was this carnival called?

    4. In Celtic-speaking regions, people practiced guising, which was
the forerunner of trick-or-treating: young people would go from
house to house in simple costumes asking for food or promising
"ill fortune" if none was given. One member of each guising
group would be dressed as a Lir Bhn ["loy van"]. What *type of
animal* is a Lir Bhn? *Hint*: You'll need two words to answer.

    5. The term "trick-or-treating" is relatively recent, first
documented in print in 1925 in a Canadian newspaper, the "Blackie
Herald". Blackie is a town in *which Canadian province*?

    6. In 1950, part of Philadelphia participated in a pilot program
where trick-or-treaters would collect coins on Halloween for a
specific charity. This program expanded across the continent and
continued until 2006 when it was modified over safety concerns.
    What charity was this for?

    7. On 1517-10-31, what happened at the Castle Church in Wittenburg,
    Germany?

    8. On 1864-10-31, which western state was admitted into the US,
    becoming the 36th state?

    9. 1940-10-31 is considered by historians to be the end of what
    military battle or campaign?

    10. On 1941-10-31, construction was completed on which American
    national monument?
