• QFTCIWSS24 Game 4, Rounds 4,6: constellations, reconciliation

From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Sun Apr 27 07:23:12 2025
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-09-30,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of What She Said, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 4, Round 4 - Science - Constellations

The answers are in the stars this round! We'll name a
constellation; you tell us which number it is on the
    2-page handout:

    http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/4:4/cons.pdf

(Note that the numbers are *above* the drawings.)

    1. Leo.
    2. Orion.
    3. Aries.
    4. Libra.
    5. Cygnus.
    6. Scorpio.
    7. Aquarius.
    8. Centaurus.
    9. Cassiopeia.
    10. Canis Major.

So there were 6 decoys. If you like, for fun but for no points,
decode the rot13 and answer them:

    11. Ivetb.
    12. Gnhehf.
    13. Pncevpbea.
    14. Naqebzrqn.
    15. Hefn Znwbe.
    16. Fntvggnevhf.

    * Game 4, Round 6 - Canadiana History - Truth and Reconciliation

Today is Canada's annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:
a day for Canadians to stop, pause, and reflect on the historical
mistreatment and abuse the government, churches, and many other
organizations and colonizers have inflicted on our indigenous
    communities.

    1. Before it was designated a national day of commemoration, the
day was first referred to -- and still often is -- by reference
    to what item of clothing?

    2. At the time of that first observance, the day related
specifically to the so-called "residential school" system rather
than other means by wbich indigenous people were oppressed.
Within 1 year, when was that first observance?

    3. The first residential schools were created in 1883. Indigenous
children were forcibly removed from their homes. Parents would
attempt to reclaim their children, which led to the government
creating what system to allow indigenous people to leave their
    reserves?

    4. Which Prime Minister formally apologized for the residential
    school system in Canada?

    5. Within 2 years, when was the last residential school in Canada
    closed?

    6. The inspiration for the <answer 1> came from residential school
survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad. On her first day she was forced
to hand over her clothes, including an item from her grandmother.
<answer 1>. Its color is also an important one in First
Nations communities. Name any one of the things it represents.

    7. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a statutory
holiday in all three territories and in 3 provinces. Name *any
    one* of those provinces.

    8. What is the official motto of <answer 1> day?

    9. On 2021-05-26, it was reported that the unmarked graves of over
200 schoolchildren were found in at a former residential school
    in what BC city?

    10. The Roman Catholic Church has yet to formally apologize for
its role in the residential school system, but two other churches
have apologized for their participation. Name *either* of
    those churches.

Astronomy being my favorite subject, you'd think I'd ace this. Nope, I recognize maybe half of them. The rest of my answers are guesses. Note
that one that I recognized was in the decoys. I didn't even need to
    rot13 it because it's a two-word name.
