These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-06-10,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Smith & Guessin' and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30

    * Game 5, Round 2 - Entertainment - Tony Awards

Broadway is to hand out its annual awards next Sunday, June 16.
Here's some questions about the Tony awards. Note that in the
context of Tonys the word "play" is limited to non-musical plays.

    1. The most-nominated musical this year, with 13, is "Hell's
Kitchen." It's inspired by the life of -- and features music
and lyrics by -- a native of the New York neighborhood with
that name. She's won 16 Grammy awards, and her singles include
"Empire State of Mind (Part II)." Name her.

    2. "Stereophonic" is the most-nominated play this year with a
record 13 nominations. It follows a fictional rock band as
they struggle through recording a new album. The play's music
was written by Will Butler, a member of *which award-winning
    Montreal indie rock band*?

    3. Which 2016 musical holds the record of 16 Tony nominations in
    one year?

    4. This musical was about trying to stage a flop on Broadway, but
it was definitely not a flop. Which 2001 musical won a record
    12 Tony awards?

    5. This composer, who died in 2021, won 8 Tony awards -- the
most music Tonys of any individual. His winning shows included
"Company", "A Little Night Music", and "Into the Woods." Who?

    6. Two other 8-time Tony winners are on the list of EGOT winners,
meaning that they also each won a Grammy, an Oscar, and an
Emmy. They are a director-choreographer who won his Oscar for
"Cabaret", and a director who won his Oscar for "The Graduate."
    Name either.

    7. Which Rodgers and Hammerstein musical has won more Tonys over
all its Broadway productions than any musical? The show grabbed
17 awards -- 10 for the 1949 original starring Mary Martin,
and 7 for the 2008 revival.

    8. Which Canadian musical debuted in Toronto in 1998, then went
on to win 5 Tony awards in 2007, including Best Original Score?

    9. Which musical, based on events in Canada, was nominated for
7 Tony awards in 2017 and won for Best Direction? Before
Broadway, it played for 3 years in Toronto, and it's returning
    here this fall.

    10. Before his fraud conviction and prison stint, this Toronto
producer's shows won 20 Tonys. They included Best Musical honors
for "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Show Boat" in 1992 and '93.
    Name the producer.

    * Game 5, Round 3 - Geography - Airport Codes

Vicarious world travel tonight, as we land at airports around the
world. Note, we are always using the 3-letter IATA codes (like
you see on your baggage tags), and not the 4-letter ICAO codes.
In some cases we will ask for the code, in others the city.
And by "city" we mean the main city served by the airport --
    YYZ is Toronto, not Mississauga.

    1. Every once in a while, some very confused travellers end up
in the wrong city. YQY is the airport code for auch a city in
the Maritimes. But what is the city on the other side of the
world where they likely meant to go?

    2. This northern Canadian airport is named for former Deputy Prime
Minister Erik Nielsen. What city has the airport code YXY?

    3. What is the code for Chicago's O'Hare airport?

    4. New York City is served by 3 major airports -- two located in
Queens, and one in New Jersey. LGA and EWR are the codes for
2 of them. What is the code for the third?

    5. HYD is the code for Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in this
capital city of the Indian state of Telangana. What city has
    the code HYD?

    6. BOM is the airport code for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
International Airport. Which city does this airport serve?

    7. JNB is the code for O.R. Tambo International Airport in what
    major African city?

    8. NIM is the code for Diori Hamani International airport in Niamey
in sub-Saharan Africa, in the country where Canadian diplomat
Robert Fowler was kidnapped in 2008. Niamey is the capital of
    what country?

    9. RUH is the code for the international airport in which Middle
    Eastern city?

    10. SNA is the code for John Wayne Airport, serving Orange County
in California. In which city is John Wayne Airport located?

    4. This musical was about trying to stage a flop on Broadway, but
it was definitely not a flop. Which 2001 musical won a record
    12 Tony awards?

"The Producers". 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, and Joshua.

    5. This composer, who died in 2021, won 8 Tony awards -- the
most music Tonys of any individual. His winning shows included

    Name either.

As far as I can tell Mike Nichols is the only correct answer here,
but since the question had a hint pointing directly to Bob Fosse
(never a Grammy winner), I decided to accept it. So, 4 for Dan Blum
    and Joshua.

    7. Which Rodgers and Hammerstein musical has won more Tonys over

17 awards -- 10 for the 1949 original starring Mary Martin,

    Whitehorse, Yukon. 2 for Joshua.
