• QFTCIMM24 Game 9, Rounds 2-3: subway stations, greatest of

From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Tue May 28 05:06:28 2024
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-04-01,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Misplaced Modifiers
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation
of current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2023-05-24
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 9, Round 2 - Canadiana Geography - Subway Station Addresses:
    Don't be Fooled!

Toronto subway station names don't always match their addresses.
In each case name the station at the given address.

    1. 16 Shaftesbury Av.
    2. 7332 Jane St., Vaughan.
    3. 10 Linnsmore Cres.
    4. 449 University Av.
    5. 2800 Steeles Av. W.
    6. 355 Strathmore Blvd.
    7. 5102 Yonge St.
    8. 7 Crescent Rd.
    9. 173 King St. W.
    10. 35 Quebec Av.

    * Game 9, Round 3 - History - The Greatest of...

The TV series "100 Greatest Britons", was broadcast by the BBC
in 2002. It used TV surveys, a weekly winnowing process, and
panel debate to determine who the British people considered the
100 greatest Brits of all time. Since then, a myriad of countries,
including Canada, have used and adapted BBC's template to produce
their own "Greatest" lists. These questions are based on those
lists, as of whatever date they were each compiled.

    1. Winston Churchill was chosen the greatest Briton. Which
20th-century figure was the highest-ranking *woman* on that list,
    coming in at #3?

    2. Howard Florey, who shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology
or Medicine with Sir Alexander Fleming in recognition of his
role in the development of penicillin, was the greatest of
    which country?

    3. Which 20th-century political fiigure was selected as the
    greatest Frenchman?

    4. Topping South Africa's greatest list, not surprisingly, is
Nelson Mandela. At #3, somewhat surprisingly, is another
political activist who was not a native of South Africa --
but he did spend 21 critical years of his life there. Name him.

    5. Which political martyr was named the greatest Chilean?

    6. The greatest Spaniard is currently living in self-imposed exile
in the UAE, dodging potential charges of large-scale bribery
and embezzlement back home. Name him.

    7. Which nation's greatest includes painter Ren Magritte,
singer-songwriter Jacques Brel, and Adolphe Sax, inventor of
    the saxophone?

    8. Nikola Tesla is the second-greatest of which nation?

    9. Everyone wants a piece of this guy. The ninth-greatest Canadian
-- who lived 1847-1942 -- also features among the 100 greatest
Britons and Americans. Who is he?

    10. 3 of the 10 greatest Canadians are still alive. Name *any
    one* of them.

    * Game 9, Round 2 - Canadiana Geography - Subway Station Addresses:
    Don't be Fooled!

Toronto subway station names don't always match their addresses.
In each case name the station at the given address.

The addresses shown are for the actual station entrances. TTC system
maps and in-train diagrams used to show the nearest address on the
main street the subway line follows -- for example, 1189 Yonge St. was
given for Summerhill -- for convenience in getting to addresses on
that street. For some reason this information is not shown any more,
and neither is the actual entrance address as used in this round.

This was the hardest round in the original game, and here nobody
even tried guessing. So, here, this round never happened.

    1. 16 Shaftesbury Av.

    Summerhill.

    2. 7332 Jane St., Vaughan.

    Highway 407.

    3. 10 Linnsmore Cres.

    Greenwood.

    4. 449 University Av.

    St. Patrick.

    5. 2800 Steeles Av. W.

    Pioneer Village.

It's actually about 1 km from Black Creek Pioneer Village.

    6. 355 Strathmore Blvd.

    Coxwell.

    7. 5102 Yonge St.

    North York Centre.

    8. 7 Crescent Rd.

    Rosedale.

    9. 173 King St. W.

    St. Andrew

There is a St. Andrew St., but it's nearly 2 km away.

    10. 35 Quebec Av.

    High Park.

Charles de Gaulle. 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Dan Blum, Erland,
    and Dan Tilque.

    4. Topping South Africa's greatest list, not surprisingly, is
Nelson Mandela. At #3, somewhat surprisingly, is another
political activist who was not a native of South Africa --
but he did spend 21 critical years of his life there. Name him.

Belgium actually had two lists for their two language communities.
These individuals all appeared on both lists.

    8. Nikola Tesla is the second-greatest of which nation?

    Croatia. 3 for Joshua.

He was Croatian by place of birth, but Serbian by ethnicity.
I don't know if there was a list of the greatest Serbians that
he might well also have been on.

    9. Everyone wants a piece of this guy. The ninth-greatest Canadian
-- who lived 1847-1942 -- also features among the 100 greatest
Britons and Americans. Who is he?

Alexander Graham Bell. 4 for Joshua and Dan Tilque.

    10. 3 of the 10 greatest Canadians are still alive. Name *any

Don Cherry (!), Wayne Gretzky (duh), David Suzuki (envronmentalist).
    4 for Joshua.
