I’ve played poker in 143 casinos in eleven countries, plus

you’ve seen it all and nothing can surprise you.
Then this happens. I’m playing in a casino poker room.
They’re having a big tournament, but they kept two tables
up front for cash games and I’m playing in one of them.
The tournament starts and this guy stands up and walks
out of the poker room. I notice that every half hour or
so the same guy comes back, looks in the poker room then
walks away again. And he kept doing this over and over.
I assumed he was backing a player or players in the tournament.
I finally cash out and when I’m leaving, I see the same guy
swing by again. So, I asked him how the tournament was going.
He says “Great, I’m sitting out till they get down to the final table”. So, I told him the dealer was blinding him off. He explained to me
that when a player is “sitting out” the dealer never touches his money.
He was just waiting for the other tournament players to eliminate themselves. Then he’d go back and take his seat at the final table.
I just wished him good luck and walked out. But, privately,
I was thanking him for a good laugh and for showing me that
there are still surprises in poker.

That must have been a unique place. I have never been in any tournament
that did not blind out "missing" players. Including those that bought
in and never showed up at all. I would not think just being around with
entry chips would not help that much late in the game. Wait for the
final table ... you would be low man on table and apparently not aware
of any tells or information gained about any of the other players.
Thanks for a post about poker. Maybe this will be an interesting
thread. We will see who ruins it first.
