Zlatno runo by Borislav PekiÄ: A monumental saga of the Balkans
Zlatno runo (The Golden Fleece) is a seven-volume novel by the Serbian writer Borislav PekiÄ, published between 1978 and 1986. It is considered one of the most important works of contemporary Serbian literature, and has been compared to James Joyce's
Ulysses, Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks, and Aldous Huxley's Point Counter Point. The novel traces the history of the Balkans through the wanderings of generations of the Njegovans, a Vlach family that assimilates into the Serbs over time. The novel also
draws parallels between the Njegovans and the Argonauts, the mythical heroes who searched for the golden fleece in Colchis.

The novel consists of seven books, each corresponding to a different historical period and a different location. The first book, titled The Time of Miracles, covers the 18th century and the origins of the Njegovans in Constantinople, Moscopole, and
Epirus. The second book, titled The Pilgrimage of Arsenije Njegovan, covers the 19th century and the migration of the Njegovans to Serbia and Slovenia. The third book, titled The Rise and Fall of Icarus Gubelkian, covers the early 20th century and the
rise and fall of a wealthy Njegovan who becomes a tycoon in London. The fourth book, titled How to Quiet a Vampire, covers the World War II era and the collaboration of a Njegovan with the Nazis. The fifth book, titled The Golden Fleece, covers the post-
war era and the return of a Njegovan to his ancestral homeland in Epirus. The sixth book, titled Besnilo (Rabies), covers the late 20th century and the outbreak of a deadly virus at Heathrow Airport. The seventh book, titled Atlantis, covers the future
and the end of civilization.
The novel is written in a complex and experimental style, combining various genres, perspectives, voices, and languages. The novel also incorporates elements of mythology, philosophy, history, religion, science fiction, and satire. The novel challenges
the reader to question the nature of reality, identity, truth, morality, and destiny.
