• A free Cabbage

From Jill McQuown@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 31 18:14:27 2025
Someone who works in my building was gifted some farm fresh vegetables
and it was more than she could use. So when she offered me a free
cabbage I said heck yes, thank you!

I love cabbage. I also have a corned beef brisket in the freezer. So
this weekend I'll be cooking corned beef & cabbage in the crock pot.

Lucky girl! Don't forget the cornbread; maybe even some small
red potatoes thrown into the pot, too?

It was very nice of her. It's a very large cabbage! I'll probably only
be able to fit half of it, cut into quarters, in the crock pot with the
corned beef. I'm not sure about adding potatoes.

There's likely going to be half a cabbage left. I need to think about
    what to do with that.

I've made three skillets of cornbread in the last two months. I'm

Obviously, you can use whatever oil you like, if you don't
    have EVOO.

I prefer Savoy cabbage for this, but I've used round cabbage
    successfully.

    Thanks. Yes, I have EVOO.

I just put the corned beef brisket in the crock pot on high heat with
the seasoning packet and a couple of extra bay leaves. I'll be adding
some wedges of cabbage to it in about 5 hours.

I'll set the rest of the cabbage aside to roast, although I'm not sure I
want it as charred looking as in that article. Even when I grill
cabbage I do it offside the coals so it will caramelize nicely but
    doesn't blacken.

The very idea of charred greens turns my stomach. A few years ago I was
in Sydney looking for a restaurant and it seemed that every place was
featuring charred greens of one sort or another. I opted for a sandwich instead.
It just takes one chef to feature something different and the rest all
    follow suit.

That's an idea! I have a great recipe for cabbage rolls my mother used

cream added. She called it Hungarian cabbage rolls. I guess it is.
Töltött Káposzta. She didn't add bacon or use bacon grease, though.
I'd have to buy some ground pork. Meanwhile I've just wrapped up the
half head of cabbage and put it in the refrigerator.

Wonderful! I hope your Majesty keeps us updated with all the details of
how this enormous cabbage gets cooked. It sounds like a Popeye size
cabbage! Enough to feed everyone in the entire Dataw realm.

    Roast it.

I have grilled cabbage wedges in the past but I've never roasted
    cabbage
in the oven.  Any specific instructions?

Obviously, you can use whatever oil you like, if you don't
    have EVOO.

I prefer Savoy cabbage for this, but I've used round cabbage
    successfully.

    Thanks.  Yes, I have EVOO.

I just put the corned beef brisket in the crock pot on high heat with
the seasoning packet and a couple of extra bay leaves.  I'll be adding
some wedges of cabbage to it in about 5 hours.

I'll set the rest of the cabbage aside to roast, although I'm not sure
I want it as charred looking as in that article.  Even when I grill
cabbage I do it offside the coals so it will caramelize nicely but
    doesn't blacken.

The very idea of charred greens turns my stomach. A few years ago I was
in Sydney looking for a restaurant and it seemed that every place was featuring charred greens of one sort or another. I opted for a sandwich instead.
It just takes one chef to feature something different and the rest all
    follow suit.

I'm not a fan of charred vegetables. Roasting is sometimes nice but
    blackened, no thanks.

    Jill

Makes sense. I guess it's the opposite of steamed vegetables.

    Yes, I keep forgetting that.
