Aren't you all sad on the 4th of July? Considering how things are
going in the US, wouldn't it have been better to be a UK colony to
this day?

I'd be happy if Canada annexed Michigan.
In any event, UK has so few of its former colonies left, I doubt
we'd still be with them.

We'd still have all those grumpy hillbillies whose ancestors left

I don't think we want Michigan. There is some natural beauty, but
inheriting Detroit in the deal would probably double our annual homicide >rate.

We gained our independence peacefully, and most of our people were
either Loyalists who escaped persecution in the US or immigrants from
the US. The other colonies may have gained independence from Britain
but they remained members of the Commonwealth.

I'm sure it depends on the neighborhood. Admittedly, I know very little about Detroit neighborhoods, but I follow "urban explorers" from time to time, many scan parts of Detroit.
There is one guy who only posts Google Earth screen shots, showing nice little Detroit neighborhoods circa 2008/2009, then you can watch over
the next 15 years how the neighborhoods just fall apart. Many have half
of the houses abandoned by 2015, and show empty lots circa 2021.

There is actually a book written about the fires in Detroit that have
saved people a lot of money in demolition costs. It is interesting to
look at it with Google Maps. You can use the overhead view to locate
the neighbourhoods with the most gaps and then go to street view for a virtual tour of the burned out areas.

in other times when i was much further south and exploring
the hill country of eastern TN and western NC looking for
property to buy i was often driving into places and would
see people looking at me like i didn't belong. the only
time i got worried was when one particularly scruffy
character was reaching behind his front door for a shotgun.
i just nodded, turned around and left.
dogs running up and barking were common but i ignored
them because most of the time they weren't going to be a
problem (i usually had no plans on getting out of the car
unless i found a particular spot with nobody else around).

not even have my doors locked on the car and my windows

nothing myself. no music playing. i like hearing what is
