This one ought to be less upsetting to some. It's from many years ago,
at a duck swamp in Fallon, NV. The trees are Russian olive, according
to my Dad, who first pointed them out to me. The camera was pointing
west, as was the camera in the first photo.

Detroit has a horrendous crime rate.  Recently its homicide rate was
    pegged at 41.4 (per 100,000) compared to Toronto's 2.6.

Unfair comparison officer dave. Everyone knows that toronto is perfect

    Australia: 1.0

I'm sure it depends on the neighborhood. Admittedly, I know very little
about Detroit neighborhoods, but I follow "urban explorers" from time to
time, many scan parts of Detroit.

There is one guy who only posts Google Earth screen shots, showing nice
little Detroit neighborhoods circa 2008/2009, then you can watch over
the next 15 years how the neighborhoods just fall apart. Many have half
of the houses abandoned by 2015, and show empty lots circa 2021.

There is actually a book written about the fires in Detroit that have
saved people a lot of money in demolition costs. It is interesting to
look at it with Google Maps. You can use the overhead view to locate
the neighbourhoods with the most gaps and then go to street view for a

at one time i was driving around and exploring more and
accidentally drove into a pretty harsh neighborhood. as
i was driving in i was of course the distinct minority of
the not-dominant color and everyone was looking at me. i
ignored them. then i got to the spot where it ended and
i had to turn around and drive back out the way i came in
everyone still looked at me, but nothing happened. i did
not even have my doors locked on the car and my windows
were open. i didn't hear anyone say anything and i said
nothing myself. no music playing. i like hearing what is
    going on around me.

in other times when i was much further south and exploring
the hill country of eastern TN and western NC looking for
property to buy i was often driving into places and would
see people looking at me like i didn't belong. the only
time i got worried was when one particularly scruffy
character was reaching behind his front door for a shotgun.
i just nodded, turned around and left.

dogs running up and barking were common but i ignored
them because most of the time they weren't going to be a
problem (i usually had no plans on getting out of the car
unless i found a particular spot with nobody else around).

I got some property in New Mexico that my dad gave me. When my parents
bought it in the 60's, there was talk of a factory being built there and
that the place was going to explode. That place exploded alright, but
not in a good way. Demming, NM is practically the crime center of the
US. Can we pick 'em or what?

i almost bought 20 something acres of a valley upwards
of all the neighbors and isolated by the ridges. pretty
much just a place to be and enjoy not being by anyone
    else.

it turned out to be a good thing that the offer i made
was not accepted as a few years later they had a snowstorm
followed by a heavy rain which washed out the roads and
bridges to the property (and many others in a fairly large
area). i did see that eventually the owners accepted an
offer for close the price i made for it.

considering how much i was coming back here to visit
family it was much better for me to eventually just move
    back.

about Detroit neighborhoods, but I follow "urban explorers" from time to
time, many scan parts of Detroit.

There is one guy who only posts Google Earth screen shots, showing nice
little Detroit neighborhoods circa 2008/2009, then you can watch over
the next 15 years how the neighborhoods just fall apart. Many have half
of the houses abandoned by 2015, and show empty lots circa 2021.

at one time i was driving around and exploring more and
accidentally drove into a pretty harsh neighborhood. as
i was driving in i was of course the distinct minority of
the not-dominant color and everyone was looking at me. i
ignored them. then i got to the spot where it ended and
i had to turn around and drive back out the way i came in
everyone still looked at me, but nothing happened. i did
not even have my doors locked on the car and my windows
were open. i didn't hear anyone say anything and i said
nothing myself. no music playing. i like hearing what is
    going on around me.

in other times when i was much further south and exploring
the hill country of eastern TN and western NC looking for
property to buy i was often driving into places and would
see people looking at me like i didn't belong. the only
time i got worried was when one particularly scruffy
character was reaching behind his front door for a shotgun.
i just nodded, turned around and left.

dogs running up and barking were common but i ignored
them because most of the time they weren't going to be a
problem (i usually had no plans on getting out of the car
unless i found a particular spot with nobody else around).

Man, it's the way you coolly slide into and out of all these dangerous
places! The locals figure you must be one bad motherfucker, so they
just look, but don't dare do any more. You've got 'em scared shitless.
