April Brought Price Relief in the Grocery Aisles

    By Megan Leonhardt

"Americans got a major reprieve from inflation in the cost of groceries
last month, reducing the squeeze on household budgets—at least for now.

The overall food index fell 0.1% month over month in April, driven in
large part by a 0.4% monthly decline in grocery prices. Compared with a
year ago, however, food inflation was 2.8%.

The 0.4% decline in grocery prices is the largest drop since September
2020. It was driven primarily by a 12.7% decrease in the index for

Nationwide, the cost of conventional, white eggs was $3.99 a dozen at
the end of April, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The

helped lower overall food costs for Americans. The BLS reported that the
index for food at home rose just 2% over the past 12 months.

The cost of dining out was up 0.4% month over month in April for the
second consecutive month. These costs, which the BLS tracks as the food-away-from-home index, rose 3.9% over the last year.

Lower food costs could help offset some of the rise in prices for goods
that is expected as the full effects of higher tariffs start to hit Americans’ budgets in the coming months..."
