Good move. It is almost 15 years since I had heart surgery and had to
stop eating bacon. It wasn't that much of a hardship but every once in a
while I had to go for blood tests and I found it easier to deal with my
taking myself out for a bacon and egg breakfast.

It is not unlike my almost daily trip to the corner coffee shop,
Sometimes I go in and walk right up to the counter to order. Other times
I go and there are a dozen or more people in line and, being a small
place, that can mean a 15 minute wait to order.

We have one McDs in town and it must be one of their most unprofitable franchises ever. It used to be right across the street from a pub where

It wasn't luck. People are not in the mood to buy food at McDonald's or
go shopping or do much of anything these days. Shortly, we'll be
learning new ways of doing things - things like eating cat food directly

    Benefits of electric lighting:

    Electric lighting is highly desirable...

The light is much brighter than oil or gas lamps, and there is no
    soot...

Although early electricity was very expensive compared to today, it was
far cheaper and more convenient than oil or gas lighting. Electric
lighting was so much safer than oil or gas that some companies were able
to pay for the electricity with the insurance savings...

    This would require simultaneous crashing
(& failed accociated backups &c) of the
complete ensemble of all the computers used
by all the people who posess the private keys.

The day *will* come when all crypto becomes worthless.
That will be when quantum computer qbit size

I wouldn't know about any of that stuff. Hawaiians typically have a two
income household. That's just the way things go here. Back in the 70's,
we worked for about 5 bucks an hour each. We were able to pay rent, buy
food, and have cable TV on such paltry earnings.

Hawaii's plantation history made us the most woke state of the union.
Health insurance was provided by the employer for full time workers. The
State of Hawaii is our biggest employer. Unions are strong here.
Anything that adds parity between workers and bosses is always a good
thing. I'm not saying that Hawaii is a worker's paradise. Life is kind
of tough here. In spite of that, Hawaii is among the healthiest and
happiest states in America. That's just the way things go here.

Nope. Not if you are happy with a remake of Roots with a white Kunte Kinte.

We have been erasing historical figures because their words and actions
run contrary to our contemporary standards. There is a movement in
Toronto to change the name of a major street because the man for whom it
is named, Dundas, is being blamed for extending slavery here, and
slavery never really was a big thing here.... unless you were one of the
few people who were slaves. He had been a British legislator who was ab abolitionist but argued against the immediate abolition of slavery, but
for a good reason. He didn't think that the bill for immediate abolition
would pass and even if it did they would have trouble enforcing it. He
wanted and got an amendment that would phase it out. The bill passed and withing a few years slavery was gone.

There is no similar movement to erase Joseph Brant, an native leader for
home there are schools, a hospital and a city named. He is a native hero
and he was also one of the biggest slave owners in the country. He used
to steal slaves as loot on his rains into the rebel colonies.

They also don't want to look at the African role in enslaving black
Africans. Warring on enemies to capture and sell slaves was a major
industry. Here were are roughly 200 years after the abolition of the
slave trade and people are still blaming Europeans for the damage done
by slavery, something that would never have happened without their
active participation in it. But.... put on a black face for a
masquerade and you are some sort of nasty racist bastard.

    Sure it was.

It’s been nearly 200 years since white performers first started painting their faces black to mock enslaved Africans in minstrel shows across the United States. It was racist and offensive then, and it’s still racist
    and offensive today.

It sure isn't complimentary but it was certainly weird that it was done
by white performers wearing dark make up in venues in which black people
    were not allowed.

I watched a new episode of 'Finding Your Roots' on PBS a couple of weeks
ago. A white historian sat at the table and read to black historian
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. *his* family ancestry which included white former
slave owners. Of course he knew that but they had never delved into his
family tree before. It was an interesting turning of the table for them
to use the records and DNA to track back his early ancestors and give
him a map. I'm pretty sure most black people are aware of having that
sad history in their lives, having white ancestors. They don't choose
to dwell on it or keep beating the dead horse. Continuing to play the
blame game is useless. Being "woke" is not a new thing, it just has a
    new stupid name.

Oh, I don't know if anybody demanded it. But the latest live-action
version featured color-blind casting, ending up with a somewhat dusky
    Snow White of Colombian descent.

People expected a white Snow White, and howled like monkeys about
the casting. The actor didn't help herself any by criticizing
Donald Trump. And the movie gained some bad press by casting Gal
Godot as the wicket queen. Godot is an Israeli who served in the
IDF and is a vocal supporter of Israel.

My thoughts may differ from others but I liked the remake of True Grit
much better than the original with John Wayne. Maybe it's because I
never thought much of John Wayne's acting skills. He is one of a number
of Hollywood stars who made a good living playing the same character in
    a few dozen different roles.

Sometimes a remake may be needed to cast better actors in roles. One of
the most disappointing casting decisions I have seen was Tom Cruise
playing the part of Jack Reacher. I have read most of the Reacher books
and the man's physical stature is a major factor of the character. He is
a big, tall, muscular man. He is at least twice the size of Cruise.
Now they are doing Reacher for television and Alan Ritchson is a much
better selection for the title role.

It's not the 80s anymore, Biddy.

Oh, I don't know if anybody demanded it. But the latest live-action
version featured color-blind casting, ending up with a somewhat dusky
    Snow White of Colombian descent.

Somebody should make a biopic of Mohammed Ali and have Ali played by

Considering 'Snow White' was written by The Brothers Grimm published in
1812 in Germany, one would not expect anything other than white people
to be featured, not even in the 1960's Disney cartoon film.  No one

How would we be with a woke version of Tarzan. He was the son of
British peerage in the 19th century so he as British and white.

"Me Tarzan, you Jane" does sound kind of like Ebonics, doesn't it?

Some actors are a director's actor. Wayne was a redneck's actor.

Ah, but one must admit the 1930's versions of those films starring
Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan and Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane were the
best!  They got a little stupid later when "boy" (Johnny Sheffield)
came along as a child who was apparently adopted in the middle of a
jungle at age 7.  He just sort of showed up because everyone had to
pretend Tarzan & Jane never had sex. LOL

You may recall that back in the 50s married couples slept in different
    beds.

Yet Ricky & Lucy managed to reproduce! So did Ward & June Cleaver. I
wonder if they flipped a coin to decide which bed to use? We certainly wouldn't want youngsters to get any ideas! LOL

I have to admit that I don't recall how Boy entered into the
situation. We are talking more than 60 years back.

When it comes to the Weissmuller Tarzan films, closer to 100 years. If
you get a chance to watch them again they were a lot more graphic than post-code films. In the first few Tarzan films of that era, pre-code,
both Tarzan and Jane were practically naked. As the 1940's film era
loomed, people started getting really uptight and the "code" became the
norm for what was allowed on screen.

    The magic of television ;-)
We had a native guy who had a chip in his shoulder about his ancestry.
He had been given up for adoption and had a tale about how his birth
mother had been the first native woman teacher in the country and how
she had been subjected to racism because she had had him out of wedlock.
What a crock. He was born in the late 40s and back then there was a
strict taboo on single women having babies and it was totally
unacceptable for teachers. Back then they did not allow pregnant women
to be teachers, even married ones.

Most of the pilots I have known have been quirky. There are a lot of
bush pilots in northern Canada and they are a special breed. Air travel
is pretty popular in the north because of the long distances and the
lack of roads. My brother once had a summer job fueling planes at the
airport in Thompson Manitoba. Back in the late 60s that was pretty much
the end of the Earth. He got to know a lot of the pilots and they would
take him along on fishing trips. They would be half pissed at take off
and drink all the way to the destination and back.

It was kind of funny how my brother got up there. He had flunked out of university and spent way too much time partying. My father offered him a
plane ticket to wherever he wanted to go.... one way. He chose
Thompson. Dad's strategy seemed to work. My brother came back in the
fall and was prepared to settle down. He got a job down here and spent
the rest of his working life at the same place.

It doesn't take much to have something go terribly wrong in those
things. They require a lot of maintenance. I just checked out the cost
per hour at a helicopter training school and it runs from $620- 950 per
hour, about 5-6 times the cost of flying a single engine plane.

I didn't realize they had video of the rotor coming off but came across

separated from the helicopter and the body immediately plunged into the

I think the vehicle will remain stable if motors go out. The motors are computer controlled. You can tell it's not human controlled, because its
too stable in flight. It's probably the most stable heavier than air
aircraft in aviation history. My guess is that all aircraft of this type
will have a safety parachute system installed.

Considering 'Snow White' was written by The Brothers Grimm published in

The 1981 series, although I seem to recall it as one movie.
    Probably I binge-watched it.

The funniest part for me was the military officer saying
how many helicopters he crashed learning how to fly one,
presumably with no instructor or simulator, &c.

Back in those days planes were relatively cheap. I have been reading a
number of books about WW II and air force stuff lately and recently came
across a factoid that in WWII there were more training deaths in
training and in accidents than in combat.

Helicopter accidents are notoriously difficult to walk away from.
    They don't glide very well.

Since the thread drifted to films with helicopters, it's notable actor
Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed in a helicopter crash during
the filming of 'Twilight Zone: The Movie' in 1982. Morrow and one of
the child actors were decapitated and the other child crushed under the helicopter wreckage. Pyrotechnic movie effects were blamed for causing
    the crash.

For me "woke" is political correctness and the acknowledgement of social

take it to an annoying extreme. The word alone is annoying. It is a play

Garcia, 29, was arrested and deported last month after residing in

I like the term virtue signalling. It is perfect for people who want to
send a image of themselves as having great personal values without
having to actually do good things. You can bully people into wearing
pink Tshirts to protest against bullying. You can wear an orange T
shirt to make them think you care about native children. Hang a dream
catcher in your car to let people think you care a lot more about the
plight of native people than you actually do. Show up for rallies to
support migrant workers so you can hire cheap help.

    social and
racial justice are important things, to try to sideline
those to me just puts a person on the level of someone who

Stick their heads in the sand? Many do that about the fact of racism
among minorities. We currently have a government that reduces jail
sentences for "racialized" criminals. Apparently it is our fault that
two particular groups are over represented in our prisons and want to
attribute it to the justice system being systemically racist rather than
them committing violent crimes in disproportionate numbers. They want to
ignore that reality despite those communities also being victimized by
    those criminals.

A couple years ago there was a hot issue about residential schools and
the allegations of physical and sexual abuse and the deaths and
disappearances of native children. No doubt some died at the schools.
There were in remote places at a time when there were a lot of fatal
childhood diseases. The pushed the government to fund a program for
ground search radar to find bodies. They found evidence of ground
disturbances and apparently a couple of them were dug up, but now there
is a veil of secrecy. After all the whining and moaning and accusations
it was time to put up or shut up. They have no proof of bodies and the
story disappeared. There are still lots of people who will throw the
case of the missing children and the "bodies" discovered but there were
not bodies. It was more like the old septic beds that caused the ground disturbance.

in a society where certain minorities are often on the bad

No doubt there have been cases of cops being over zealous with firearms.
The US is flooded with handguns and the people have a more callous
attitude about lethal self defense. There have been a number of highly publicized cases that have lead to protests, but most of those IMO were
cases of people being the authors of their own misfortune, refusing to
comply with legal orders and resisting arrest.

another bit of stupidity was the use of the abbreviation
    SJW.

That is an extreme version of virtual signalling. They have issues that
