The difference is that "haole" is not a derogatory term. Only people
that don't live here consider it to be insulting. My wife is a haole but
she's not a dumb haole or a fucking haole. What's funny is that you
consider yourself an expert on the Hawaiian language. People on rfc
consider themselves an expert on everything.

There are not many derogatory Hawaiian words for the different cultures
that live here. I can only think of two*. Da Hawaiians are not into
calling people names. You probably have a few words for the different
people that live in your country. You might consider them to be
derogatory or you might not. It's not my place to tell you whether
you're name-calling or not. I'm not an expert on how you use language to describe people, nor do I want to be.

normal people here. Other than the attention whore trolls, no one else
is constantly referring to people by their ethnicity.

That's just the way the locals talk. We talk about the differences
between the peoples that live here. I talk about culture because food
and culture is my thing. If you don't know the culture behind the food
you're eating/cooking, then you don't know the food. If I'm cooking
something I want to know the culture and traditions behind it.

People are kind of ignorant about other cultures on the mainland so they
get all upset when I talk about the Koreans, Samoans, Hawaiians,
Filipinos, etc. On the mainland, talking about other cultures is not
    considered PC. Why is that?

The difference is that "haole" is not a derogatory term. Only people
that don't live here consider it to be insulting. My wife is a haole but she's not a dumb haole or a fucking haole.

"Haole" is a white person. It's not witty or derogatory. It just is. You consider yourself to be an expert on the Hawaiian language? That's just
so Caucasoid of you. You should probably try to get a life.

This is the colonialist mindset! My favourite current example, the EU and
the danish want to have a say about the independence of greenland. Very disrespectful! The only ones that should have a say are the esqimaux and
    Trump!

I have proposed that Trump can lease greenland for 50 billion dollars per
year. That would make a nice additional income to the 56,583 (2022)
inhabitants of 883657.635686 USD per person and year! =D

So far I have received no calls from the white house, but I suspect it
    will come.

You sound like an arrogant fool. In 1897, shortly after the overthrow of
the Kingdom of Hawaii, the use of the Hawaiian language was banned from
being spoken in our schools. It was in 1986 that the ban was lifted,
which allowed Hawaiian to be taught in schools. That's the reason that
no one of my generation can speak olelo Hawaii - even native Hawaiians.

These days, it is the young folks that speak that language. Two of my granddaughters go to a Hawaiian Immersion School. It's a strange
situation because Hawaiian is the official state language. When I was
going to school, I wasn't interested in learning any language but I took Spanish. I didn't even know that the teaching of Hawaiian was illegal.
Of course, I wasn't aware of the overthrow of the Kingdom either. That
    history was also suppressed.

Back then, the people of Hawaii were happier because we didn't know the
truth. Now we have taken a bite of the apple and we can't ever go back.

I am not adverse to discussing native issues with my fellow honkies and
have discussed them with native people. I think some of them need to
face the facts of issues and not just blame everyone else for all their problems. It's not like we sit around and whine about them and the
stereotypes, though there are certainly ea number of them who seem
determined to perpetuate those stereotypes. It is a bit ironic to hear
native spokespeople whining about racism and white people thinking they
are all alcoholics and drug abusers and then they turn around and demand
more money from the government for detox and rehab centres.

When the Hawaiians first saw the missionaries from America, they were
startled by their pale skins. The story goes that the missionaries
refused to use the traditional Hawaiian greetings, which was to lightly
press each other's forehead together and breath in the air between
themselves. "Ha" is the breath of life and the spiritual essence of the
life of the land. Haole means the people that do not share the breath of
life. Well that's what some people say.

My guess is that the Hawaiians thought the Missionaries from New England
were so pale that they looked like ghosts or dead people. In that case,
"haole" means no breath i.e., the newcomers were so white as to be dead
people. I like my origin story better. Some of the Japanese tourists
that come around here are so pale that I get frightened by them. The
Japanese skin has the added feature of being somewhat transparent i.e.,
    extra creepy.

Beats me, my Portuguese friend went off to India to learn Sanskrit. Why
did he do that? I do not know. Perhaps one day, I'll ask him. That guy
was a lot smarter, and more focused, than I. Most of my friends were

I can see 100 years from now, Hawaiian will be the primary language of
the Kingdom of Hawaii - either that, or the machines will have killed
off all humans. If that is the case, Hawaiian could be the universal
language of the planet Earth. How long would it take for all the
machines on this planet to learn Hawaiian? My guess is less than a
    second.

Very interesting! So does Haole slightly change its meaning depending on
what the speaker thinks about the person it designates? Sounds like a >complicated language!

Most, if not all, languages are context based. The meanings of what is
being said depends on the setting, who is saying the words, how they say
it, and who is reading/hearing/seeing what is being said. This quality
is the reason for the richness of languages. It's also why the language
of humans is such an imperfect form of communication.

The language of machines is pretty much as perfect as humans can make
it. My father-in-law understood programming on the machine level. He had
a lot of difficulty understanding higher level languages like BASIC. The instructions seemed murky and vague to him. That guy was aspergers
    through and through.

Really? Are Hawaiians very naughty people?

    Without a doubt, yes.

I live in "Nev [a, as is in cat] duh". All you outlanders get that
    wrong.

I believe that you're right about this. I shall inquire about the right pronunciation the next time I'm there. Who the heck do I ask though? The check-in guy at the hotel? The people in Zippy's? Da Hawaiians in Vegas?

    From our friendly artificial acquaintance:

    <quote>
Locals in Nevada pronounce the state's name as

    "neh-VAD-uh".

The second syllable, "VAD," rhymes with "mad" or "sad." This is
different from the more common pronunciation outside of Nevada, which
is "neh-VAH-duh" (where "VAH" rhymes with "spa").

Aha! So the stories about the old sailors on the island are all true! Hmm,
I do not think the wife will let me travel to Hawaii, ever! ;)

Gross generalization. I pronounce it the way you do.

I'll trade you that for "Mackinac".

We've had this discussion before. When I was a kid, Dad upgraded our car
