• Weeks Behind

From Bob La Londe@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jul 20 12:27:22 2025
Ordinarily I do other chores around the shop between tool changes and
designing the next job, but not the last few weeks.

I am weeks behind due to the other things I have had to work on. It
took me almost two weeks to get everything I needed to install the new
air dryer. I'd already been running slow for a few days as I assembled
an outdoor shade structure for metal storage and cutting area, and took
care of other chores that had been piling up... like cleaning up the
area for the shade, and of course testing some prototype fishing lures.

Of course no project no matter how difficult doesn't breed more
projects. All the fancy plumbing, filters, and layout for the new air
dryer would make it way to difficult to use the 50 amp outlet I use for whichever welder I need to use at the moment. I disconnected it.
Instead of waiting until the last minute and I have to weld something I
decided to install a new welding outlet between tool changes NOW instead
    of panicking later.

Amazingly I seem to have all the parts necessary to plumb and install
it. Wire, fittings, conduit, box, ring, plate, etc.

And while you're doing all that I'm falling behind on firewood for
this winter . I think I finally found a solution for the fuel supply
problems on the Rusty Tractor . The filter screen inside the tank was
plugged and damaged so I pulled it and put an inline filter just before
the pump . It still had problems because it was pulling from the lowest
spot in the tank . Where all the trash collects . I added a standpipe to
the outlet valve so it's pulling from about an inch above the lowest
    spot now  .
I'm collecting parts to rebuild the front axle of the Yanmar , didn't want to take it out of service until I had the JD running reliably . Got
the parts I'm sure I need on hand or on the way , I know I'll be
ordering more as I tear the axle down . I'll probably replace all the
seals and bearings and possibly a gear or 3 . I'll wait until I know ,
some of that stuff is pricey .

Ahyup, but once you have it apart you can look at seal numbers and
bearing numbers to see if you can do a lookup or crossover to an
industry standard bearing/seal, or maybe once you have them in your hand
it will turn out to be easy to lookup.

I got lucky like that when I had to replace a drive line on my last
truck (*my fault). The MFG and part number sticker were still on the
drive line. They were the OEM MFG for GM, and the exact replacement was available from Rock Auto for about half price.

    * On the old steel drive lines you could drive them around for a while
with a u-joint going out. It never occurred to me that it might be an
all aluminum drive line. Oops. The yoke was destroyed.

Okay... The outlet for welders is now 11-1/3 ft closer to the front of
the shop and 1-1/2 foot closer to the floor, but I'll loose the angle
across the back bay. I'll gain about 3 ft when I am running that heavy
220V cord out the front door.
