This is the stuff we were discussing a few days ago . I tried it out
just a few minutes ago , and it works as advertised . There is no
sugaring on the back side of the piece of 1 3/4 stainless tube I just
butt welded . Not to say the inside weld is smooth , but that's a
reflection on my lack of skill with a TIG torch . I followed the
directions on the package with one exception , I have no methanol on
hand so I used 95% pure ethanol (generic Everclear) as the solvent .
It mixed easily without lumps , applied easily and dried quickly . It
turns powdery as it dries and is easily wiped from the edges you're
welding . Leaves a black glassy coating that they say is easily
removed - I didn't try .
I give this product 5 stars .
I've just got the SIF purging flux UK equivalent and it also mentions
using washing up liquid and clear varnish as well as methanol to form a paste, their instructions here https://www.weldability-sif.com/media/pdfs/info/FO210050.pdf . I haven't
had an opportunity to try it yet.
Looking at their instructions it appears this flux is water soluble
after welding . That seems to be the major difference . I got the stuff
because I'm building an exhaust system for my truck and I didn't want to
have to purge with gas . Most of the welding will be on the bench (so to
speak) but some joints will have to be welded on the truck . I'm still
hoping that I can figure out the MIG for those , but they will still
need some shielding on the back side .
