The large "tenon" on the base was the result of finding a major check in
the wood during initial shaping, otherwise it would have been deeper.

Yeah, yesterday was one of those days. I told the wife, "If everyday was like today, I would quit turning." Stupid mistakes, lathe would not stay balanced and things like that. But there is always Monday ;-)
