Today I saw Mr. and Mrs. Hairy Woodpecker at the feeder, the male would
get a little bit a suet, hop over and place it in his mate's mouth who
was a close by. I've only witnessed that behavior before with cardinals
but maybe it's not unusual with a lot of species. The male takes on the "protector" role even though the female is capable of getting the suet
on her own.
