The Garmin heart rate monitor I just bout claims that the battery will
last 4 1/2 years if used one hour a day. Is there anyone here that rides
for only an hour? While that isn't the point but rather the long term
battery life, as soon as I got the new heart rate monitor the old on
started working perfectly. Since I just put a new battery in the old one
to try and get it working to no effect, it surprised me how well it
worked and I will now also be able to compare battery life.

The Wednesday night loopers I meet at the pub if more often in winter, it’s 22ish miles so just over a hour or sometimes less.
Rather longer chatting in the pub!

The vast majority of my morning commutes are about an hour.

In both cases it is another hour back making your ride two hours. So in
the best of cases I would expect the battery life to be 3 1/4 years and
not 4 1/2. On the other hand they claim that battery life for daily use
so I expect it evensd out. The newer heart monitor is more comfortable
that the older one. I'll see what the battery life is like sinxce they
both have new batteries.
The battery life on the 1030 isn't very good. I charged it three days aqo
and getting ready to use it now+, it is too low a charge to start. Good
thing I'm getting ready early. It has time to get a decent charge on. Or maybe not and I will have to use the 830. And the new heart rate monitor.

Certainly for the loopers no most folks are relatively local so be 10/15
mins at most returning home post Pub.

My Edge 1030 Plus retains its charge for weeks and was good enough for
rides that took 9-10 hours. The "Edge 1030 Plus Battery Life Expectation Chart" in <https://support.garmin.com/en-IE/?faq=2dJjsNk32X5dwId0zSifJ6>
is realistic, IMHO. I used mine mostly according to the third column
(high), with high backlight intensity (~70-80%, if memory serves me
right).

Garmin sells different heart rate monitors. AFIK none of those is
spacified for a battery life of 4.5 years. The one I own (HRM-Dual) is specified for 3.5 years. I don't use it anymore, because it is somewhat unreliable and because my skin doesn't like it. I switched to the HRM
from a GAMIN watch. Inferior, because of the optical measurement, but
good enough for my purposes.

My morning commute was about 40 minutes, in summer. Didn't have any of
that fancy equipment, during those years. For many years, I didn't even
have an odometer on the bike.
