Get Jim DuFresne's book "Fifty Hikes in Lower
Michigan". Available from Countryman Press, Inc., P.O. Box 175,
    Woodstock, Vermont 05091. $13.00.

Also "Exploring North Manitou, South Manitou, High and Garden Islands of
the Lake Michigan Archipelago". By Robert Ruchhoft; $14.95. Pucelle
    Press, P.O. Box 19161, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45219.

My wife & I started backpacking 2 summers ago. We started with South Manitou Island and still regard it as our favorite spot to date. 20
miles offshore a ferry goes here once per day. Drops off day visitors
and cub scouts who all scurry to the 2 *near-by* campgrounds. We went to the 1 *far-away* campground which had maybe 7 campsites; we were the only ones there. We stayed for two nights but could have stayed longer for
more exploration. We saw no other humans in those 2 days (and this was a weekend in August! -- high season!!) Needless to say, clothing was optional, bathing in Lake Michigan encouraged. The entire west side of
the island is a giant 350 foot sand dune down to the beach and lake. Our campground was 4-5 miles from boat dock and "village". Really
spectacular. Catch ferry from Leland in NW lower peninsula, 4 hours from Detroit.

Second great place was Huron Forest. Look on your Rand McNally for the
town of Glennie. 3 hours north of Detroit. Just west of Oscoda. Bald eagles nest here. Camp on a lake (all over!) but be warned that the
beavers come out at night to party in the lake and build houses. Their noise and merrymaking will actually keep you awake at night! Well
groomed trails are wide to accomidate cross country skiing in winter. We found it fun to take compass and topography map and strike out off
    trail.

Closer to Detroit there are 1/2 dozen hikes near Pinckney (1/2 to 1 hour from Detroit) ranging from 2 miles to 35 miles long. Big Mt. Biker area,
I think. We've not yet done these.

    Have fun,

    Sam

My name is Thomas Hooker. I am a 60 year old man who loves to hike but not alone. I am having a real hard time finding hiking partners because hiking is so unpopular in my area. I am reaching out to other hikers for help in finding them. I am offering a
reward of a $100.00. At this time I only have a one hundred dollar bill so it is a first come first serve offer. The way it will work is if you know a hiker who is open to the ideal of a possible hiking partner you would have them contact me and after I
do 3 hikes with them and we decide we are going to be hiking partners you get the money, but only than and not before. Once I have another hundred, you find me another hiking partner I will give you another hundred and so on. If the person does not work
out I will let you know why so you can look for another. Due to the response to this ad I may owe you the $100.00 but I pay in order of response and you will be paid. I have no interest in hiking groups. It just is not my style of hiking. I am looking
for someone who is at least 30 years of age because I am 60, someone who has at least 1 weekend day a month to hike, the health and time to do 4 hour hikes and who lives within one hour drive from Holland, Michigan. This is not a offer of money for you
to hike with me but for you to find me a hiker. When I hike with a friend we go slow and really take in the sights. I have a wonderful , faithful marriage of 35 years and am only looking for others to hike with and nothing more. I am looking to do as
many hikes as I can in the years I have left. I think you would find me to be good company as many people tell me. I am a God fearing man, honest as the day is long and kindhearted. People say I have a good sense of humor too. If you yourself are open to
the ideal of a hiking partner lets meet over a meal to discuss the possibility of hiking together. I only hike from June 1 to October 31. If you are interested e-mail me at [email protected] I own a Meet Up group for finding hikers. If interested,
go to. https://www.meetup.com/West-Michigan-Hiking/members/ You will never be asked for a penny. On my hikes you are more than welcome to bring your kids, friends or dogs. I have found trails at over 200 hundred places all in the West Michigan area. You
tell me what is your favorite type of landscape to hike in and I can show you hiking trails going through it. Go to my Meet Up group and look it over. If you decide you would like to join than I would like to meet you over a meal and discuss the
possibility of hiking together first before allowing membership. Thanks and have a good day and may God bless. Thomas Hooker
