• Recommendation for paint

From Kerry Kirby@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 12 06:19:37 2023
Our club in Canada is doing a refinish on our ASK 21. We are fast approaching the end of the gelcoat removal stage and are trying to source filler , primer and paint products. Can I get some recommendations on a products. Looking for a good product as
we don’t want to sand again! At least on this glider.
    PPG? Sherwin Williams? Glasurit? Others?
    Thanks.

Much will depend on what you can get locally and what materials your painter is familiar with.
The most commonly used acrylic urethane is PPG Concept. Many good results.
I have had good results with Sherwin Williams 3rd Dimension AU.

Excellent post Richard thank you. Know nothing about the craft, surprise at the amount of effort and work required.
Also interesting to see sanding after painting 3 coats. I thought painting was the last item.

Ok Thanks Hank We did get a possible time for delivery of a PPG paint of 12 weeks so we are trying to see what alternatives there are. What are the benefits of the Acrylic Urethane?

Ok, after answering Mr. Kirby, do the manufactures sand after applying ‘polyurethane’? And understand I do not know the difference between acrylic urethane and polyurethane. My knowledge stops at Turtle Wax ‘Wax n Wipe’ spray on.

Oil vs water base, acrylic will fill holes better as a primer. OBTPMB

Most paints have orange peel after the finish coats and you have to finish sand and polish to remove.

The PPG Concept is probably a great paint but the PPG JAU Shopline is very similar acrylic urethane.

My wings were coated with the PPG JAU Shopline same process as on my website and they have been out in the sun in Northern California all summer May thru October for 21 years. Except for minor nicks and scratches good enough and half the price of
    Concept.
