Canopy gas strut positioning

My basic knowledge of gas springs (struts) is that they are filled with nitrogen and also have oil--for lubricating the sliding piston.
One of the FAQ on a gas spring suppliers web page is about positioning the gas strut to extend the life of the nitrogen: big end up or down.
Which is correct for a glider canopy?
