• Soar Forecast off the air?

From [email protected]@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 10 07:11:42 2022
Noticed about a week or two ago that www.soarforecast.com is no longer available. Anyone know why? Is this temporary or permanent?

There was a rec.aviation.soaring thread back in April 2012 about issues with the site but it returned. I remember looking at it, I think earlier this spring. I can't get it now.

It could be that Kevin is no longer supporting the site. That happens with aging programmers.

Kevin Ford is a math professor. His faculty webpage (https://faculty.math.illinois.edu/~ford/) includes his email address, in case anyone would like to contact him about his website.

I had contacted him previously (Kevin) but his address was on my old compter so I fired that up and got his email. He was unaware the site was down!! A bit later he replied that the web server he was using was shut down and he had to find a new one.
About a week later he said he was transitioning to a new server. And now the site is back up! Thank you Kevin Ford for your useful website.

"It's on the Internet, its free.....". Someone has to have the storage space as well as well as the bandwidth. Whether it's your PC/server at your home, it still needs a connection. Nothing worthwhile is truly free.
Thanks for those that do things like this.

Many thanks to Kevin Ford for reviving the site. I find this model to be very useful as I'm heading out the door to soar.
