• Bad IGC file - too many "F" records?

From 5Z@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 23 21:02:37 2022
A friend's IGC file has a LOT of time gaps and OLC only gave him a couple points today. Looking at the file, I see a "F" record associated with each gap. According to IGC reference, this indicates a satellite change. Is the receiver having issues? I'
ll have him confirm the antenna is OK tomorrow.

    Here's the flight: https://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-3.0/gliding/flightinfo.html?dsId=9213232

    Any thoughts?

    Tom

Have him check the cabling between antenna and GPS logger for damage and
    loose or damaged connectors.

Do the Pressure Altitudes record during the 'gaps'? If tot, it might be
a transient Power failure. Do the F-record appear before or after the
    'gaps'?

Interesting. If the antenna was the problem, the IGC file should show
Pressure Altitude fixes. It Doesn't. It should also show zero GPS
altitude during the gap. It doesn't do that either.

My best guess is that the Flight Recorder firmware is being
    re-initialised for some reason.

The likely culprit is a power glitch, although I recall one problem many
years ago where it was caused whenever the radio transmitted, and the
current drawn when transmitting may have had the same effect.

If I am right, attention to the supply cables may resolve it. Is this a
    new installation?

Can you try with the recorder on a different battery from the radio?

    Tim.

I give up here, but you get the picture:

The B records are mostly at 4 second intervals except then they aren't,
which to me points at (possibly) a dodgy power supply or intermittent
power connection though a bad system clock in the flight recorder would
seem more likely: I'd expect power intermittent enough to cause this sort
of clock instability in modern(ish) electronics would also be causing the
whole instrument to reboot from time to time..

Arrrgh! If that was my kit in this order I'd:
    1) check the battery(s) (inspect, fully charge, measure capacity
and discard of holding less than 80% of new capacity

I have the sort of charger used by radio model fliers for
their flight batteries, These can charge and measure the
capacity of Lead-acid (SLA), NiCD, NiMH and possibly LiPO,
battery types. I check my glider SLAs once a year and
discard when capacity falls below 80% (they usually last
    2-3 years.

    2) check the wiring and connectors for that flight carefully
for anything obvious like damaged cables and loose or dirty
connectors, correcting any faults, because thats cheap and
easy to do. Get a pocket multimeter if you don't have one.

    3) if the first two steps didn't solve the problem, either get
the flight recorded services or replace it.

is dated 2nd June 22 and suggests that no task has ever been declared on
this recorder, so probably a new instrument and a new installation,
    which needs inspection.

^^ two B records with the same timestamp

Clearnav records at 1 second intervals (fixed), but downloads at the
interval selected (4 seconds). Recording at 1 second intervals can lead
to duplicate times (due to rounding?). This has been observed before on recorders from various manufacturers.

I suspect that this is a new installation as above. It needs inspecting
by a competent person and trying having the radio on a separate battery.
