from the 1-16-2024 Kiplinger letter,
"Are Democrats turning a new page in their approach to immigration?
Maybe. Case in point: The Laken Riley Act, which calls for federal
authorities
to detain illegal immigrants accused of certain crimes, received
bipartisan support
in the House and recently cleared a procedural vote in the Senate,
thanks to 32 Dems.
Such strong Democratic support would’ve been unthinkable just last year.
But Democrats have been doing major political soul searching since the
Nov. election,
which resulted in a Republican trifecta of winning the House, Senate and presidency.
And their election postmortem shows that most Americans, including a
sizable chunk
of Democratic voters, disagree with the party’s liberal stance on immigration.
Don’t look for Democrats to do a 180-degree turn on immigration, as they still strongly oppose the GOP’s and Donald Trump’s harshest immigration stances,
including the president-elect’s proposed mass deportation of
undocumented migrants.
But the party is now willing to consider less stringent measures,
particularly bills that are narrowly tailored versus more comprehensive legislation.
And they’ll have plenty of opportunities, as Republican leaders in
Congress plan
to introduce several immigration-related bills in the coming weeks and
months.
